FRIDAY PREPS: Lady Blue defeat Wellington

AMARILLO – Farwell pulled away with a solid fourth quarter to beat Wellington 59-44 on Friday night in a Texas Class 2A area round playoff game at Caprock H.S.

The Lady Blue (29-5) advanced to a regional semifinal game set for 6 p.m. (CST) on Tuesday against Gruver at Amarillo High.

Sophomore Bella Jaime tallied 13 points, senior Charlie Trimble 12 and sophomore Makylee Baldwin 10 for the Lady Blue, which erased a four-point halftime deficit and won going away by outscoring Wellington 17-6 in the final stanza. All told, nine players scored for Farwell.

The Lady Skyrockets (22-10) were led by 13 points from Charley Wilbur and 12 from Asia Shrubs, who went 10-for-11 from the free throw line.

In another girls clash on Friday night:

Texico 52, Pecos 43 – The Lady Wolverines captured the District 6-2A regular season title, building a 15-9 lead at the quarter and riding 17 points from senior Catelyn Breshears.

Senior Emma Wahlen added eight points for Texico (12-13, 5-1), which will host the district tournament championship game at 6 p.m. on Friday. Sophomore Natalia Stout led the Lady Panthers (13-12, 1-4) with 15 points, and junior Rayne Dimas scored 11.

In boys play on Friday night:

Pecos 94, Texico 80 – The Class 2A top-ranked Panthers (22-3, 5-0) put together three stanzas of at least 25 points, although the Wolverines (14-11, 3-3) hung in for much of the game.

Junior Joshua Gonzales led four players in double-digits for Pecos with 21 points, followed by senior Aidan Holton with 17 and senior Gabe Montoya and junior Jodaiah Padilla with 13 apiece.

Texico, which clinched second in the district when Santa Rosa lost to Clayton on Friday night, also had four in double digits, getting 19 from senior Jahvon Askew, 17 from sophomore Taye Smith, 14 from junior Cade Figg and 11 from sophomore Alex Fuentes. The Wolverines will host Tuesday’s Clayton-Santa Rosa winner in a 6 p.m. Thursday semifinal game, with that winner traveling to Pecos in the finals.

Clovis Christian 47, Floyd 35 – The Eagles led 16-2 early but struggled to put away the Broncos in a non-district matchup at CCS, leading by just five points entering the final segment.

Top scorers were senior Noah Gershon with 12 points and senior Jaden Martinez with nine on three 3-pointers for the Eagles (17-8), while junior Daegan East paced the Broncos (5-15) with 10 points.

In another non-district contest on Friday, host Melrose (19-4) posted a 52-45 win over Legacy Academy (20-5).
