PORTALES - Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) will present the 46th annual Jack Williamson Lectureship April 13-15, featuring guest of honor, author, and two-time Hugo Award winner Arkady Martine.
According to a news release from ENMU, assistant vice president of marketing and communications John Houser said, “Martine is a true superstar in the world of science fiction and fantasy.”
Houser writes Martine’s debut novel, “A Memory Called Empire,” won the 2020 Hugo Award for best novel. The sequel, “A Desolation Called Peace,” won the 2022 Hugo Award for best novel and the 2022 Locus Award for best science fiction novel.
Martine is also the author of a multitude of short stories and various other works in science fiction, fantasy, and horror.
“This year marks the 46th of the Williamson Lectureship, and we are thrilled to bring Arkady Martine as our guest of honor,” David Sweeten, chair of the Williamson Lectureship said. “Martine has a range of varied interests in addition to her Hugo Award-winning work, including a Ph.D. in Byzantine history and her current work as a climate change mitigation specialist for the city of Santa Fe.”
The news release goes on to report the lectureship will be “packed” with panel discussions, readings, film presentations, and games, which are free and open to the public.
The annual Jack Williamson luncheon on April 14 is where attendees will hear Martine speak. The luncheon is $12 and requires advanced reservations.
Since 1977, Eastern New Mexico University has hosted a lectureship in honor of Jack Williamson, the “dean” of Science Fiction.
Writers, editors, artists, and other speakers have gathered at ENMU every spring to share ideas, insights, and their work with students, readers, viewers, creators, collectors, and fans.
“ENMU is fortunate to have such a connection with the work and legacy of Jack Williamson, a true master of his art,” ENMU President James Johnston said. “The continuation of his lectureship honors a core tenant of a university, to encourage creativity, imagination, and scholarly discussions.”
