Clovis, Portales athletes compete in Sepulveda meet

ALBUQUERQUE – Several athletes from Clovis High and Portales High competed in Monday’s Marilyn Sepulveda Meet of Champions at the University of New Mexico’s track facility.

In boys competition, Portales junior Manny Chavez took first place in javelin with a throw of 167 feet, 8 inches, while senior Michael Riess placed third in the 1,600 in 4 minutes, 30.69 seconds – behind Organ Mountain’s Corbin Coombs (4:28.36) and CHS sophomore Sammy Fuentes (4:29.42). Riess also took fourth place in the 800 in 2:00.98, while sophomore Tommy Lopez finished fourth in pole vault at 11-6.

Meantime, the Wildcats put together a 3-4-7 finish in shot put with senior Jeremiah Johnson leading the way at 46-11 ½ and followed by Brayden Golden (46-1 ½) and Gregorio Cordova (41-11).

Clovis’ girls collected second-place finishes from sophomore Gabrielle Foggie in the 400 (a season-best 58.12 seconds) and senior Madison Parkin in pole vault (9-6). Portales’ Kadynce Reeves was fourth in the 400 (1:01.35) and eighth in pole vault (9-0).

Clovis’ Amanda De La Rosa was 10th in javelin (87-8).

Rams, Lady Rams compete in Hobbs – PHS squads each captured six first-place finishes in Hobbs’ Pat Henry qualifier meet on Tuesday.

Individual winners for the Lady Rams were Audrey Paden in the 400 (1:04.58), Olivia Low in discus (106-8), Savanna Heflin in the 100 (13.10) and Esperanza Cruz in javelin (109-6). PHS also took the 400 relay (52.66) with Alondra Acosta, Heflin, Abby Ontiveros and Paden, and the 1,600 medley relay (a state-qualifying time of 4:09.61) with Acosta, Ontiveros, Emma Hurren and Reeves.

For the boys, Nick Lavelle was a double winner in discus (a state-qualifying throw of 127-1) and shot put (43-4), while Lopez took pole vault (12-0, beating out teammate Leo Ramirez with fewer misses), Riess won the 400 (52.31) and Chavez captured the 300 hurdles (43.80). The Rams also won the 400 relay in 45.27 seconds with Santino Espinoza, Lopez, Tillmon Richards and Xavier Tarpeh.

Efforts to obtain team scores for the meet were unsuccessful.

Clovis and Portales were slated to compete in Friday’s Wildcat Relays at Leon Williams Stadium. The next outing for both is on Friday in the Artesia Invitational.
