PORTALES – Portales High's softball team earned its first District 4-4A victory of the season on Saturday, taking the opener of a doubleheader against Roswell Goddard 7-1 at Wheeler Park. Goddard earned a split with a 17-4, five-inning triumph in Game 2.
Senor Abby Marquez and sophomore Myleigh Banda combined to scatter eight Lady Rockets hits. Meantime, Marquez also doubled three times in four at-bats for the Lady Rams (9-9, 1-5 district), who put the contest out of reach with a three-run sixth.
Junior Bailey Hinderliter and sophomore Angel Ornelas each went 2-for-4 for PHS. Hinderliter had two RBIs and scored once.
Seniors Andrea Manzanares and Cadence Tubbs were both 2-for-3 for the Lady Rockets (7-13, 1-5).
The second game was tight until the top of the fifth, when Goddard erupted for 12 runs to break open a 5-4 contest. The Lady Rockets overcame five errors with the help of 20 hits, including 4-for-5 outings by senior Jaquelin Lopez and junior Annika Roybal.
Roybal homered and scored three times while knocking in three. Tubbs also had a home run in the winning effort.
Marquez finished off a 6-for-7 day at the plate by going 3-for-3 with a double. Senior Casyn Mitchell was also 3-for-3 while Hinderliter and senior Kenzee Rowland each went 2-for-3 for the Lady Rams, who garnered 12 hits.
Portales' final six games, all district contests, are scheduled for the road. The Lady Rams played two games at Artesia on Tuesday night and travel to Lovington for a pair on Saturday.
