The Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) Chamber Singers and University Singers will be performing a concert Saturday, at 7 p.m. in Buchanan Hall (Music Department), under the direction of Jason Paulk and with the collaboration of Miles Massicotte.
According to a press release from Paulk the first half program will be centered around historical British Coronation repertoire.
Paulk writes the ENMU Chamber Singers will perform madrigals, part songs, and anthems, including a coronation anthem written in 1727 by George Frideric Handel.
The second half of the concert will feature University Singers and the ENMU Steel Band, along with Emily Salgado on drum set, performing “St. Francis in the Americas: A Caribbean Mass,” by composer Glenn McClure who is visiting the ENMU campus this week.
In his release, Paulk describe’s McClure’s work as “a fascinating synthesis of musical styles, incorporating elements of the traditional Latin Mass and numerous writings of St. Francis of Assisi, all fused with eclectic stylistic characteristics.”
Paulk writes an afterglow party and “Meet the Artists” event will be hosted at Courthouse Café, 109 S Main, on the square from 8:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. following the concert.
Paulk writes McClure, a resident of New York and “composer of substantial acclaim,” is in residence this week at ENMU and on campus Thursday through Saturday, working with students and offering spoken program notes for the concert on Saturday.
Thursday at 4 p.m. in Multicultural Affairs (downstairs Campus Union Building), McClure will present a lecture about the genesis and composition of his “Caribbean Mass,” written in 1992. Both events are FREE and OPEN to the public.
Any questions about the event should be directed to Paulk, who is Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at ENMU, email: [email protected] or phone 575-562-2798.
