No. 1 Logan hands Melrose district setback

LOGAN – Top-ranked and unbeaten Logan pulled away with a pair of five-run innings on Monday to deal No. 2 Melrose a 10-0 loss in District 3-1A baseball.

The game was scoreless until the fourth, when the defending Class 1A champion Longhorns (13-0, 4-0 district) put their first five-spot on the board. They ended it in the next frame on the 10-run rule.

The teams meet again in a doubleheader at Melrose on April 28.

Junior Kaeden Stoner gave up one hit to Melrose (7-2, 3-1) – a single by junior Dathan Yeary – with one walk and nine strikeouts. Junior Brock Burns went 2-for-3 and scored twice for Logan, while senior Skyler DeLuca hit a two-run double.

In another District 3-1A matchup at Grady, Cimarron (5-5, 1-3) pushed over the deciding run in the top of the seventh to notch an 11-10 win over the Bronchos (6-7, 0-4).

Also on Monday:

Elida 11, Floyd 1 – In District 2-1A at Elida, the Tigers built a 10-1 lead through three innings, then ended it on the run rule with another tally in the bottom of the fifth.

Senior Jose Jimenez went 2-for-2 with a double, a triple, two RBIs, three runs score, a walk and a hit-by-pitch for Elida (9-5, 3-3). His brother, junior Seth Jimenez, went 2-for-3, scoring twice and knocking in three, while freshman T.J. Kennedy doubled in three at-bats, scoring once and driving in three.

Senior Levi Victor went the distance on the mound, striking out eight and allowing two hits. Senior Brayan Gallagos was 1-for-3 with an RBI single in the third.

Texico 13-11, Raton 10-17 (Friday) – In non-district action at Texico, the Wolverines (6-7) erased a 7-6 deficit in the opener with four runs in the fourth and three in the fifth.

Senior Tristan Chavez and junior Easton Cooper and Kyle Gonser all had two hits for Texico. Chavez belted a triple and scored four runs, Cooper had a double and tallied twice and Gonser drove in one run and scored a pair.

Sophomore Chase Middlebrook paced the Tigers (5-12) with 4-for-5, scoring once, while juniors G.B. Oliver and Jacob Mattorano and sophomore Wyatt Berry all recorded a pair of knocks.

In Game 2, Raton erased an 11-9 deficit with an eight-run seventh. Oliver went 4-for-4 with a double, an RBI and four runs scored; Berry was 2-for-3 and scored twice, and Middlebrook finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

Texico’s top hitters were Chavez with 3-for-4, two RBIs and two runs scored and freshman Mason Pipkin with 2-for-3 and a run scored.
