Cats, Lady Cats fall in district duals at Hobbs

HOBBS – Hobbs’ tennis teams handed Clovis High a pair of setbacks on Monday in District 4-5A action, winning the girls tilt 8-1 and taking the boys matchup 9-0.

The Lady Wildcats played competitively in doubles, getting their only win from senior Niliyaah Hall and sophomore Hansini Lingali with a 6-3, 6-4 decision over senior Jessica Sturgill and eighth-grader Madelyn Simon at No. 1 doubles. Meantime, freshman Emily Bjorkland took Hobbs sophomore Nivia Nash to three sets at No. 6 singles before falling 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Hobbs was dominant in singles on the boys side, but seniors David Case and Gerald Gonzales forced a second-set tiebreaker before losing 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) to sophomores Isaiah Mayes and James Evans at No. 1 doubles while juniors Cooper Harriman and Drex Carter took junior Joar Rabago and freshman Landon Marquez to three sets before dropping a 1-6, 6-2, 6-0 verdict.

The Cats and Lady Cats travel to Carlsbad for District 4-5A tournament competition on Friday.
