Portales Fun Center applies for alcohol license

At their regular meeting Tuesday night, a recommendation was approved by the Portales City Council for the Portales Fun Center to sell packaged goods/alcohol for off-premises consumption.

Councilman Jim Lucero said he was part of this with RCCDC (Roosevelt County Community Development Corporation) in getting this to pass through.

Lucero said, “It has always been the owner’s business model to try to have consumption of alcohol in the premise.”

City Manager Sarah Austin said the business has expressed interest in having on site liquor sales for the venues but doesn’t believe that at this time they are offering that.

“This is the means of being able to do that,” Lucero said about having the consumption of alcohol in the premise. “Given the limitations that they have with trying to get a full liquor license.”

Community Services Director Kelly McClellan said that one of the first steps to getting an alcohol license is getting a zoning statement which is confirmation from the City that their property is properly zoned per the city’s ordinance. She explained that as the Portales Fun Center is not zoned for that type of manufacturing, they applied for a variance for special permission.

The variance would allow the liquor license application to move forward with the state. If the state doesn’t find any problems with the application, the state will then request the City of Portales set a public hearing at a City Council meeting before approving a liquor license.

Councilman Chad Heflin made motion to approve, and it was seconded by councilman Daniel Boan.

The motion was passed on a 7-0 vote.

In other items of business, the council agreed to work with a mediator going forward for negotiations regarding all the services the city provides to the county residents. That mediator will be decided at a later date.

Karen Chandler was honored for her retirement. Chandler worked for the city as the utility billing supervisor for over 36 years.

Ed Brooks was named employee of the month for his work as the airport operations specialist.

Multiple proclamations were read, making April 2023 Autism Awareness month, along with Emergency Communications Dispatchers month.
