Commission hears presentation on strategic planning

At their regular meeting Tuesday morning, the Roosevelt County Commission heard from County Manager Amber Hamilton as she presented a visual summary of the 2023 Roosevelt County Strategic Planning Retreat.

The retreat was held at the end of March, according to Hamilton. She said, “We’re very excited to see all the fruits of our labor.” The visual served as a reflection from the retreat, and what the county hopes to accomplish over the next three years.

Hamilton revealed the design to the commission for the first time at the meeting. The visual was created by Lisa Edwards with Get the Picture and showed a basketball team gathered in a huddle. Game plans were surrounding the team with a windmill and livestock shown in the background to represent rural Roosevelt County.

Hamilton said this would help “make sure our staff understand what the three-year vision is that we’ve really established.”

The visual starts with “It’s 2026 and...” at the top. Six goals that represent a basketball going through the hoop include growing assets, having a comprehensive workforce development program, recruiting and retaining qualified employees, having great working relationships with outside entities, a successful public outreach program, and reducing litigation and outside threats.

The visual also states different ”bold steps” the county hopes to take over the next three years. Those include developing a plan to approach the City about mediation, finding a dispatch solution, establishing a public outreach committee, assessing communication vehicles, revising ICIP (infrastructure capital improvement plan) process, and establishing an ad hoc workforce committee.

The commission also heard several proclamations read towards the end of the meeting Tuesday.

Shayla Ramsey with the Roosevelt County Detention Center read the proclamation declaring May 7-13 as National Correctional Officer Appreciation Week.

Ramsey said, “The 32 members of Roosevelt County Detention Center play an essential role in the criminal justice system.” She then added that while these employees aren’t always visible, they are always substantial.

Sheriff Javier Sanchez read another proclamation recognizing May 9-20, 2022, as National Police Week and National Peace Officers Memorial Day for May 15, 2023.

Sanchez said, “Our community recognizes the important work and sacrifices officers make each day to protect the citizens of Roosevelt County.” The sheriff’s office is made up of ten deputies, two sergeants, a chief deputy, a sheriff, three transport officers, and one executive secretary, according to Sanchez.

Hamilton then followed with one more proclamation, recognizing May 4, 2023, as Firefighter’s Day and May 21-27, 2023, as Emergency Medical Services Week.

The next Roosevelt County Commission meeting will take place May 16.
