CARLSBAD – Clovis High’s track teams are ready for Class 5A state competition this weekend after competing in Friday’s District 4-5A meet at Carlsbad.
Due to scoring mix-ups, team scores were unavailable at press time on Saturday morning.
Senior R.J. Nora and sophomore Sammy Fuentes led the way for the CHS boys. Nora won the 200 (22.53 seconds), the 110 hurdles (14.49) and the 300 hurdles (39.65) while placing second long long jump (22-0 ¾) and triple jump (45-6 ½), while Fuentes took first place in the 1,600 (4 minutes, 35.33 seconds) and the 3,200 (10:45.00) and finished second in the 800 (2:02.01).
“Overall, we had a lot of kids who performed their best,” CHS boys coach Mark Sena said. “They’ve worked hard throughout the year, and it paid off for us today.”
Senior Jeremiah Johnson threw 49-10 ½ in shot put, leading a 1-2-3-6 Clovis finish in the event, while Jaydin Fenstermaker added a win in pole vault (9-6). Joshua Mondragon was second (52.86) and Kaleb Foggie third (53.23) in the 400.
For the Lady Wildcats, senior Madison Parkin won in pole vault, clearing 10 feet, while junior Mackenzie Roche qualified for the 5A state meet by taking second place in triple jump with a personal-best 33-4 ½. The 3,200 relay team also qualified for state, finishing second in 10:47.92.
“Mackenzie Roche had a pretty decent jump,” Lady Cats coach Darrel Ray said. “We had several good things happen.”
On the track, Clovis won the 1,600 (4:16.75) and 1,600 medley (4:29.06) relays, while Nicole Patton (800) and Zoe Linn (300 hurdles) posted second-place finishes.
