CANYON – Eastern New Mexico University junior Timothy Frederick and freshman Alex Williams were unable to improve their standing for potential berths NCAA Division II national outdoor track championships berths in Friday’s Last Chance meet, hosted by West Texas A&M.
Originally scheduled for Sunday, the event was moved up two days due to the threat of severe weather on Sunday in the Canyon area.
Frederick ran a time of 47.15 seconds in the men’s 400, finishing sixth. He has a personal-best time of 47.05, which ranks him 21st nationally in the event.
At least the top 16 qualify for the NCAA D-II nationals, scheduled for May 25-27 at Pueblo, Colo. An announcement on qualifiers will be forthcoming this week.
Frederick, from Trinidad & Tobago, may needs at least a couple of runners who are qualified ahead of him to drop out in order to make the field.
He also ran the 200 and placed third with a time of 21.14 seconds, his third-best mark of the campaign, but he’s far enough down the list that he has virtually no chance of moving on in that event.
Williams, from Kingston, Jamaica, competed unopposed in javelin and was well off his best, throwing 196 feet, 2 inches. Still, he’s likely to make it despite dropping two slots to No. 12 in D-II, with a season-best mark of 213-8 set in the University of Arizona’s Willie Williams Classic in late March.
ENMU adds men’s assistant – ENMU men’s basketball coach Brent Owen has announced the addition of Tyrone Grady to his coaching staff for the upcoming season.
Grady spent last season at NCAA Division II Coker University in Hartsville, S.C., where the Cobras posted a 12-17 record to improve their win total by seven over the previous campaign.
“He has a reputation as a great person who is a tireless worker and recruiter, with an adept mind for the game,” Owen said. “He has experience helping college programs win championships, and has left every place along his coaching journey better than he found it.”
The Hounds are coming off a 17-12 finish in 2022-23, including 12-10 in the Lone Star Conference.
