Curry County commissioners presented with $49 million budget

Curry County's $49 million preliminary budget for fiscal year 2024 was presented to county commissioners Tuesday at their regular May session.

Commissioners unanimously approved the preliminary proposal. The budget is due in Santa Fe by June 1.

In other business at Tuesday's session:

• Lisa Pelligrino-Spear and Paul Tankersley of Clovis Mainstreet appeared before commissioners to say "thank you" to the board for support of Clovis Mainstreet and to ask for continued support.

"2022 was the most successful year we've had," Pelligrino-Spear, Clovis Mainstreet Executive Director, said.

She spoke of the opening of new businesses downtown: The Rails, El Jimador, an Air BnB suite downtown, the opening of Red Door on Main and the upcoming opening of an ax-throwing recreation business.

Pelligrino-Spear spoke of decorative lighting that will be installed in downtown Clovis "courtesy of funding from the state legislature."

She also spoke of a plan to restore the Harvey House near the BNSF offices on South Main Street.

The old hotel was once part of a chain that was popular with rail travelers in the early part of the 20th century.

Pelligrino-Spear described the Clovis Harvey House as "the last one in the country that is restorable."

She thanked the county commissioners for the Reuben Nieves park at Eighth and Main Streets downtown.

"It provides a place for us to gather," Pelligrino-Spear said.

• Cherry Gooch of the homeless relief program, "4 All of Us Transitional Improvement Inc.," appeared before commissioners requesting a "letter of support" as she seeks grants to help with the program she leads on Rencher Street.

"We're not a shelter, we are a program," Gooch said, describing how she asks for a six-month commitment from those who enter the program "to have a life."

Gooch addressed the homeless problem in Clovis saying, "This is not the Clovis I grew up in."

"The homeless here know how to stay hidden," Gooch said.

Commissioners unanimously approved the writing of a letter of support for Gooch.
