Opinion: Enough headstones in Arlington

Memorial Day is Monday, and we will once again honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their service to this country during a time of war.

Alas, I fear that we are on the brink of another major war, and I see our government doing little to curtail these fears.

For more than a year, we have been involved in a so-called proxy war in Europe that our government continues to insist we have no actual responsibility for. We continue to provide weapons, ammunition and ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) support to one side, while also funding their entire government.

The dollar figure for this support has been confirmed at more than $100 billion.

During that time, we have persisted in first denying Ukraine weapons systems that were referred to as “game changers” or “miracle weapons” that could escalate the conflict, and then providing these arms to the Zelenskyy regime. These weapons include the M777 Howitzer, the U.S. HIMARS missile system, main battle tanks (including the Abrams and Leopard tanks), various fighter aircraft from European allies, Patriot Air Defense Systems, and finally -- after steadfastly refusing to do so -- agreeing to provide F-16 fighter aircraft.

None of these systems has proved to be the game changer or miracle weapon as advertised. This includes the F-16, that even Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall has indicated will not change the situation on the ground.

My concern stems from the fact that after the steady escalation of weapons provided to Ukraine with no measurable change in the overall situation, the only remaining measure of force that the West can provide is “boots on the ground.”

In current news-speak, “The West” refers to the United States. A CBS news item from last October headlined, “The U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne is practicing for war with Russia just miles from Ukraine’s border” indicates that the 101st is in Romania. Elements of the 82nd Airborne remain in Poland and you may recall that is the unit the president told, “When you get to Ukraine….”

During this week’s ceremonies, remember the phrase, “All gave some, some gave all.” I believe we have enough headstones in Arlington for Memorial Day. We don’t need any more next year.
