Babies bring most joy into our lives

I don’t usually get to write a column, but since I was given the opportunity, I thought why not?

I’ve been given some free range to write about whatever makes me happy in this column. When I know there’s something joyful to report on, sign me up. We all need a little more positivity in our lives anyway.

Well, there are a lot of things that make me happy. I’d say the one constant thought in my life nowadays is the fact that I’m about to become a mom. Yes, Baby Sena is expected this November, and there’s nothing that makes me happier than that.

My husband Sterling and I got married in August of 2020. We met on the first day of kindergarten at Melrose Elementary in 2005. We grew up together and started dating our sophomore year of high school.

I think we both knew back then that this was a forever kind of thing, and it was only a matter of time before we got married and started our family.

So, after getting married and both of us finishing college, I took a job in Lubbock to be a TV news reporter. I gained some great experience and loved the people I worked with; however, it didn’t take long for me to find out that I wouldn’t get to become a mom as soon as I’d like to with that kind of job. It was very rewarding, but exhausting. Both mentally and physically.

So, after a year in West Texas, we decided to move back to good ol’ Melrose and be close to our families again. Before we knew it, we got a positive pregnancy test. I don’t know if I was expecting it that soon. But I do know that I haven’t felt that kind of happiness in my life, ever.

While we were over the moon and couldn’t wait to share the news, I spent the first month or so after that positive pregnancy test in the restroom and hunched over the toilet. There’s an old wives’ tale that says morning sickness means you’re having a girl. If that’s the case, then yes, I am 100% having a girl. I won’t find out for sure until early July though.

We got to see our baby for the first time in mid-April. It resembled a gummy bear quite a bit, being a little blob on the screen. I’ve since heard the heartbeat twice, which is a pretty wild thing to comprehend when it becomes real that you’re growing a human being inside of you.

I think I’ll use this column that I get to write every other week as a documentation of my pregnancy journey and how we are getting ready for this new addition. Because what’s happier than a baby on the way?
