Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
An estimated 10,000 attend Draggin' Main
An estimated 10,000 people and hundreds of classic automobiles were part of the 10th Draggin' Main, which wrapped up an eight-day run Saturday night on Clovis' brick Main Street.
Bystanders stood along the sidewalk, admiring the various models that revved their engines down the streets. Zane Brothers, board member of Draggin' Main, said this year's celebration was the biggest they've had.
"The turnout was way over what we even expected," Brothers said. "It just shows what this community is about. People are looking for things to do and by putting on an event like this I think it just really brings this community together."
Brothers said there were over 400 cars registered for the "Gearhead Gathering" event on Saturday.
He said there were no hard-set rules for hotrods to register for the events, so as long as participants had a strong appreciation for their hotrods they were welcome to take part in the show.
The celebration had a variety of entertainment for the whole family to enjoy. Brothers said the food vendors were quickly running out of food, due to the crowds.
"This is 10 years that we've done this and we build on it every year," Brothers said. "And it's gonna be hard to top this next year, because this was a great event and the community got behind it, the sponsors were amazing. We appreciate all those businesses out there."
But like some of those nostalgic weekend nights from all those years ago, the gathering wasn't all good times.
Shots heard in the vicinity of Tenth and Main streets Saturday night brought Draggin' Main's "Saturday Night Cruise" event to an early close.
Clovis Police Capt. Roman Romero said in an email there were no injuries. Officers were called to the scene, where they went on foot pursuit after the suspects. According to the email the officers were unable to positively identify the suspects or make an arrest.
Romero said there were no other notable criminal issues with the week-long Draggin' Main events.
Officers were tasked with traffic enforcement during the celebration resulting in 28 traffic stops, 23 citations and 10 warnings.
