Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Last week’s electronic mailbag offered widely different views of Pride Month and how eastern New Mexico is celebrating.
This note comes from Debra Martin of Portales:
“Support of the military and, more specifically, Cannon (Air Force Base), is a boast made often and loudly by the residents of Clovis and Portales. The most recent data estimates 6.1% of the military members identify as LGBTQ. In addition 7.2% of the U.S. population identify as LGBTQ, which statistically infers military dependents would be included.
“Please don’t say you support the military, individuals or communities, if you don’t support LGBTQ rights.
“We the People expect the military members to support and defend the Constitution of the U.S., which extends the rights and freedoms we take for granted. The defenders of our freedoms should have these same privileges.”
Pride not for newspaper
Michael Lusk of Clovis has a different take.
“We do not need a Pride celebration,” he wrote, using all capital letters.
“We don’t need a drag queen reading to our kids. A drag queen is mentally ill.
“Don’t ever have a Pride celebration again. It is not a celebration, it is a lie from hell. It is not family friendly.
“They’re trying to get our kids. Don’t put it in the paper.”
It’s a New Mexico Roadhouse
And then there’s this from a former travel writer, Diane Taylor, who wrote about the Clovis restaurant scene.
“I haven’t tried it yet, but seems everybody is crazy about (Texas Roadhouse). Honestly, I’m more excited about the new Popeyes being built — their red beans and rice are to die for…
“In the scope of the universe, or the world’s problems, my complaint is teeny tiny, but every time I drive down Llano, past Roadhouse, I get annoyed.
“They have an American flag and a Texas flag prominently displayed on their flagpoles — this is New Mexico. Where’s the New Mexico flag?!
“It’s arrogant, disrespectful, and typical Texas attitude. I don’t really have a problem with that Texas flag, just that our New Mexico flag should be first on the flag pole over the Texas one. Hasn’t anybody else noticed this?
“We are not Texas, and I wish those Texans would acknowledge we are not their poor cousins they can always treat with disrespect and thoughtlessness. Would somebody in our Chamber of Commerce please show some pride and bring this up with Roadhouse management?”
