Ag science center to host annual field day Tuesday

New Mexico agricultural producers and researchers from New Mexico State University will have an opportunity to learn from each other Tuesday at the annual field day at the NMSU Agricultural Science Center at Clovis.

According to a news release from the science center:

The field day will begin with registration and refreshments at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday at the science center, 2346 NM-288, about 13 miles north of Clovis. Abdel Mesbah, the center’s superintendent, will provide a welcome and introduction. Admission is free.

A trolley tour of the research plots will begin at about 8:30 a.m., and the following topics will be discussed:

• Measuring impacts of farming practices on soil carbon and nitrogen loss as greenhouse gases,presented by post-doctoral researchers Atinderpal Singh and Deb Aryal.

• Forage crops perennial grasses for regenerating semi-arid landscape, presented by Rajan Ghimire, cropping system agronomist, and Anuoluwapo Ogunleye and Pramod Acharya, post-doctoral researchers.

• Grass buffer strips and soil carbon, presented by Sangu Angadi, crop physiologist, and Sundar Sapkota, graduate student.

• Soil-water infiltration and moisture dynamics under cover cropping and compost application, presented by Prakriti Bista, research scientist, and Adebayo Olufemi and Hamza Badrari, graduate students.

• Weed management in sorghum, presented by Abdel Mesbah, weed scientist, and Hamza Badrari, graduate student.

• Valencia peanut breeding for drought tolerance, presented by Naveen Puppala, peanut breeder.

• Dairy industry update, presented by Robert Hagevoort, Extension dairy specialist.

• Infiltration technique demonstration, presented by Rick Strait, state soil scientist, National Resources Conservation service.

• Youth Farm to Table Field Days, presented by Program Assistant Diana Wood and Extension agricultural agent Mason Grau, Curry County Extension Office.

Lunch will be provided by Leal’s Restaurant. The afternoon of the field day will be reserved for individuals or small groups interested in touring specific trials or plots.
