Who is putting up the large crosses along the main roads leading into Clovis?

Bill Adams is a member of the group that has erected the Christian symbol on North Prince and South Prince streets and just west of Texico on US 60/70/84 between Texico and Clovis.

"The western cross has been built and we are waiting to erect it. Then we'll have one on every highway coming into Clovis," Adams said Wednesday.

Adams said the group spearheading the crosses is a men's non-denominational Bible study that meets Thursday mornings at Sam Jenkins' house.

"We were talking about a cross that was erected near Clovis Christian school (at Humphrey Road and East 21st Street) and how nice it looked," Adams said.

Adams said the group started talking about how the 10 Commandments are being taken out of some areas, off the grounds of public property.

"We decided we wanted to put back the presence of the 10 Commandments so we decided to put a cross, a large cross with the 10 Commandments, on each highway leading into Clovis. The Lord led us to do it and we just stepped up and did it."

Adams described the Bible study group as "about 16 men, with no money in the deal. Everything's been donated."

Adams said while the huge crosses were being erected, the group decided to sell small "residential sized" crosses, which became the fundraiser for the larger crosses.

Adams said donations came to the group: Steel and locations on private property.

"We asked three people if we could erect the crosses on their property, all said yes. One person came to us and said, 'Put it on my property.'"

Adams said the group believes it's important to get the 10 Commandments "back in front of people so they'd start thinking about what they stand for.

"They're the guidelines to life. If we would just follow the 10 Commandments there would be less problems in the world," Adams said.
