Pages past, Aug. 30: Fire breaks out at Diamonds LTD

1941: Mrs. Ted P. Holifield had returned from training in Seattle and opened her studio at her home at 812 Pile in Clovis.

She planned to teach piano, music theory and harmony, the Clovis News-Journal reported.

In Seattle, she had studied under Kenneth Lyman, who had been a student of the Conservatory of Leipzig, the oldest university school of music in Germany.

1942: J.S. Click, president of Portales National Bank, was welcomed into membership at the weekly gathering of the Portales Rotary Club.

Eldridge Mears, acting on behalf of the membership committee, installed Click in the category of investment banking.

Club President M.G. Hunt introduced two visiting Rotarians: the Rev. Thurman Harris of Santa Rosa and Guy Ginn of Clovis.

1949: Clovis had 200 new parking meters on its Main Street, allowing shoppers two hours before they had to “feed the kitty” again. Previous meters had one hour before time expired.

1951: A group of eastern New Mexico sports fans had made plans to travel to Amarillo to watch professional football.

The Detroit Lions were scheduled to play the Washington Redskins at Sandie Stadium in a National Football League exhibition game.

Reese Cagle, Lynell Skarda, Charles Fischer and Andy King were among residents planning to attend.

1955: Around 500 hands were at work harvesting Roosevelt County’s largest broomcorn crop in recent years, the county’s employment office reported.

1956: As far as the working man was concerned, the Republican party had put back the clock to the Hoover days of 1932.

So said Lt. Gov. Joseph Montoya, who was in Clovis for the opening rally of the state’s Democrats’ general election campaign.

Montoya addressed a crowd of about 200 at the Spanish American Club.

He claimed Republicans only cared about large companies like General Motors, ignoring the sad plight of the small farmer.

1960: Eastern New Mexico University officials had announced 54 students from Portales, seven from Dora, five from Causey and seven from Floyd had enrolled at the university.

1962: Curry County Agent Phil Crystal received the distinguished service award from the National Association of County Agricultural Agents at the 47th annual meeting of the association in Las Cruces.

Crystal was one of a handful of agents to receive the national honor reserved for ag agents "who have demonstrated their ability in working with rural people in improving agricultural and general economic and social conditions within their counties," according to the association.

1967: Poor Boy’s Butcher Shop, at 801 Prince in Clovis, offered 4 pounds of fresh, lean hamburger for $1, in a Labor Day weekend sale. And the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. was promoting a new way to enjoy its products — in no-deposit, no-return bottles.

1968: Firefighters spent five hours battling a blaze at Diamonds LTD, located at 316 Main St. in Clovis.

A passerby called in the fire shortly before midnight.

"The blaze caused such intense heat that the windows melted," said Norman Petty, who owned the store.

Officials said a short circuit in a window display probably caused the fire.

Petty said everything near the front of the building sustained extensive damage, while smoke damage was evident throughout the store.

1970: Clovis’ Aztec Bowl on Maple Street was recruiting for fall leagues.

Mondays were for business and professional leagues; the “major leagues” would compete on Tuesdays; industrial leagues were scheduled for Wednesdays; and the “continental” league was slated for Thursdays.

Individual bowling instruction was also available every Tuesday afternoon, according to an advertisement in the Clovis News-Journal.

1970: Clovis High School Senior Mary Ann Villa had been named the school's student of the week.

Villa, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.D. Villa, had received the school's Spanish award and was a Girls State delegate.

She was a member of the National Honor Society and listed her hobbies as reading and “just goofing off.”

She was a member of the Speech Club and The Thespians.
