Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Happy Labor Day weekend. Here are some great activities going on:
• The Clovis Senior Center is holding an “English Tea” event at 2 p.m. Friday. Organizers hope seniors will join them for what they are calling a heartwarming hour of enchantment. “As the gentle aroma of freshly brewed tea dances through the air, let’s come together for a delightful gathering filled with laughter, connection, and a touch of elegance. This is more than just tea; it’s an opportunity to share stories, make new friends, and bask in the joy of togetherness. Whether you’re a tea aficionado or simply curious, our cozy atmosphere welcomes you to relish in good company and soothing sips. Let’s celebrate life’s beautiful chapters over a cup of tea. We can’t wait to raise our teacups with you!”
• The Catfish Derby at Oasis State Park is set for Saturday. Registration begins promptly at 4 p.m., and the competition starts at 5. It is $5 for park entry and $5 to register for the derby. Each division will have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards. The junior division is all competitors 8 years old and older, and the adult division is 18+. The size of the catfish determines the winners at the end of the derby at 9 p.m., and organizers will be awarding cash prizes. Winners must be present to claim their prize. Door prizes will also be given out every half an hour. My great-grandpa, Bud Kenyon, would certainly be there!
• Lastly, and perhaps the most unique event this weekend, is the Thrifted Ghost Painting event that begins at 6 p.m. Saturday at Williams Livestock Ranch, 1425 N. Main in Clovis. The “thrifted ghost painting” trend comes from social media, where people take old paintings and upcycle them by adding ghostly characters to the artwork, turning the piece into seasonal and festive decor. Organizers say there will be snacks, drinks, and fantastic company. The event is limited to 25 people, and the cost of admission is $25, which includes the refreshments, the paintings, and the supplies. RSVP to [email protected] .
