Wolverines hold on late to edge Santa Rosa 28-26

SANTA ROSA – Senior quarterback Colton Figg threw for two scores and ran for another, and Texico held off former district rival Santa Rosa 28-26 on Friday night.

Figg threw scoring passes of 9 yards to sophomore Denny Turner in the first quarter and 32 yards to sophomore Luke Thompson in the third. Figg’s 6-yard run early in the final stanza made it 28-13 and proved to be the difference.

Junior Alex Fuentes added an 8-yard scoring run in the second quarter for the Wolverines (2-0).Figg finished 15-of-20 for 212 yards and also carried nine times for 63, while Thompson caught five passes for 107 yards and Fuentes carried 18 times for 104.

Senior Jykub Gage ran 14 times for 85 yards for the Lions (1-1), while senior A.J. Romo caught three passes for 59 yards and a score. Santa Rosa missed a potential tying 2-point conversion after its final score with about four minutes left, and the Wolverines used a third-and-15 completion from Figg to Thompson with about two minutes remaining, allowing them to run out the clock.

Texico travels to Roswell on Friday for its third consecutive road tilt, facing New Mexico Military in a 7 p.m. start.

Dora 42, Mountainair 32 – At Dora, senior Cole Kircher accounted for four touchdowns and a safety as the Coyotes (1-1) opened their home schedule with a victory over the Mustangs (0-1).

Kircher caught scoring passes of 24, 65 and 22 yards from junior Aaron Combs, the latter providing the clinching points with about two minutes left. He also went in on a 2-yard run and notched a second-quarter safety with a sack of the Mountainair quarterback.

The Coyotes’ other tallies came on second-quarter passes from Combs to junior Mason Christensen, covering 25 and 61 yards.

Dora’s next outing is at home at 7 p.m. Friday against Roosevelt County and 6-man District 2 rival Floyd.

Mancos (Colo.) 58, Melrose 28 – Senior Kail Wayman ran for five touchdowns, and the Bluejays built a 30-0 lead late in the half in taking their season opener, played at Escalante H.S.

Jacob Martin added the other three TDs for Mancos, with two rushing scores and a kickoff return.

Senior Michael Cardonita accounted for three of the Buffaloes’ TDs, on passes from junior quarterback Josiah Roybal. Sophomore Jaxon Odom added the other tally on an 85-yard kickoff return, and Odom and Cardonita each caught a 2-point conversion pass from Roybal.

The Buffs (1-1) helped make the Bluejays’ job a little easier with five turnovers, including three interceptions. Senior Chris Medina had an interception and a fumble recovery for Mancos.

The Buffs travel to Magdalena on Friday.

Roy-Mosquero 60, Grady 28 – The host Blue opened a 20-0 lead at the quarter and kept the Bronchos at bay, improving to 2-0 in their matchup at Roy.

Freshman Zander Ciancio caught TD passes of 38 and 13 yards from senior Xavier Romero for the Bronchos (1-1), while senior Zane Rush scored on a 30-yard run and threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to freshman Noah Stanfield.

Stanfield had a pair of 1-point conversion runs for Grady, while Rush ran in another and Ciancio caught a pass from Romero to round it out.

Grady returns to action with a 7 p.m. start at Elida on Friday.
