ALAMOSA, Colo. – Sophomore forward Giani Mascarel scored a pair of goals in his Eastern New Mexico University debut and the Greyhounds posted a season-opening 4-1 men’s soccer victory over Adams State on Thursday.
In the first match of the day, ENMU and Adams State played to a scoreless draw.
Both teams were slated to face Fort Lewis on Saturday at Alamosa.
Mascarel, from Nice, France and a transfer from Northeastern State (Okla)., found the top right corner of the net in the 18th minute, and less than two minutes later teammate sophomore defender Felix Drizinsky made it 2-0 by scoring off an assist from junior defender Mathieu Beuvain.
Mascarel added his second goal about five minutes into the second half, getting an open chance on a crossing pass from Drizinsky. The Grizzlies’ Emmanuel Kolleh scored in the 73rd minute, but less than two minutes later ENMU put it out of reach on a goal by sophomore forward Matteo Azambuja.
ENMU outshot the Grizzlies 8-2 on goal in the match.
ENMU women 0, Adams State 0 – Senior goalkeeper Samanta Jeffries made four saves and the Hounds were able to hang on for a tie against Adams State.
Scoring chances were few and far between for both sides. In the closing moments of the contest, ENMU junior midfielder Abbie Dickens had a shot from the top corner of the 18-yard box strike the frame to keep the match scoreless.
The shutout was the second in two years in the season opener for Jeffries, who now has three consecutive shutouts dating to the end of the 2022 campaign.
ENMU’s women host New Mexico Highlands in a 6 p.m. start on Wednesday at Greyhound Stadium, while the men will be in Colorado again next weekend to take on Westminster (Utah) on Thursday and Colorado Mesa on Saturday at Grand Junction.
