Publisher's journal: Here's your chance to beat the Davids

Tell the truth, Reader. Have you ever wanted to beat me?

Think back to those op-ed pieces I've written through the years, like the one that ended "Kill them. Kill them all," referencing prairie dogs. Or maybe that story I wrote about the tunnels under the city of Clovis that turned out to be an April Fools' joke.

You did want to beat me, didn't you?

Now turn your attention to longtime Mayor David Lansford, who's now a partner in the Zia Radio Group. Did you ever want to beat him? Yeah, me, too.

I don't mean physical violence, of course. I can't imagine anyone would want to literally beat a journalist or a politician. But I suspect if you look deep inside your soul, gentle Reader, you have on more than one occasion wanted to beat me and/or Lansford like a rug -- in a game of cards or trivia or dominoes or something.

Here's your chance.

On Wednesday, we begin a football contest: Beat the Davids.

It's going to work like this:

The Davids will each pick winners in seven football games (Stevens in the NFL, Lansford in college). Readers can then pick their winners in each of those games.

If a player beats both Davids – picks more winners than Stevens and more winners than Lansford – their name will be placed in a drawing for a $50 gift card from Juanito's Mexican Restaurant.

I'm thinking this is the cheapest advertising Juan "Juanito" Garza will ever purchase since it's highly unlikely anyone will ever predict winners of football games better than football experts like Lansford and myself. (That line was intended to get readers fired up with a maniacal need to beat the Davids. Truth is, we're not really experts and it might not be hard to beat the Davids, in which case Juanito's will have to issue a $50 gift card every week. In that case, Juanito's will probably want to beat the Davids.)

Anyway, the contest will be in the newspaper each Wednesday starting this week through the end of the regular college football season.

Names of the winners each week will be announced Monday mornings on radio stations KTQM and KCLV. On Tuesday mornings, the radio stations will announce the winner of the $50 gift card ... if there is one.

Those names will then be in the next Wednesday newspaper, along with a new chance to beat the Davids.

All the rules will be in Wednesday's paper.

Good luck, Reader. If nothing else, we hope you'll have fun trying to beat the Davids.
