CLOVIS – Clovis High’s volleyball team dominated in the first and third sets on Tuesday night, and the Lady Wildcats cruised to a 25-10, 25-21, 25-10 victory over Lubbock Estacado at Rock Staubus Gym.
It was the team’s first home win in their second match so far at The Rock.
Senior outside hitters Kailyn Jefferson and Elizabeth Warwick collected 13 and 11 kills, respectively, for the Lady Cats (4-2), and Warwick added a pair of blocks. Senior libero Brienne Romero had 10 digs and three aces, junior defensive specialist Jori Mondragon chipped in six digs, senior outside hitter Aeryanne Conn added five digs, while junior setter Amanda De La Rosa posted 19 assists and senior setter/outside hitter Erin Creasy finished with three aces and 10 assists against the Lady Matadors (5-19).
“We didn’t play very good in the second set,” first-year CHS coach Cristy Hill said. “We missed a lot of serves and we weren’t hitting the ball that well.
“The other games, we jumped out on them. They couldn’t respond to Kailyn and Liz; those two were just pounding the ball.”
The Lady Cats are competing in the Zia Classic at Roswell this weekend. Their next outing is on Saturday when they take on Del Norte and Highland in Albuquerque.
Lady Rams fall in four sets – At Roswell, Portales High dropped a four-set match to Roswell High on Tuesday, with the Lady Coyotes (4-2) winning 25-19, 18-25, 28-26, 25-20.
Sophomore Skyler Massey posted a double-double for the Lady Rams (5-2) with 15 kills and 15 digs, while senior setter Brenna Jewell did likewise with 12 digs and 12 assists to go with three aces and senior Audrey Paden just missed with nine kills and a team-leading 19 digs.
Also for PHS, senior Alondra Acosta had 16 digs and two aces, senior Brenna Jewell compiled 16 assists and three aces and senior Alondra Acosta and junior Addison Ainsworth each collected four blocks.
The fourth set was back and forth, and hotly contested, Lady Rams coach Bailey Greenwalt said.
“We’re well-matched against them,” said Greenwalt, whose squad is slated to host the Lady Coyotes at the RAC on Sept. 25. “They’re scrappy, and they work hard for every point.”
Tuesday, Portales returns to action with a contest at Ruidoso.
