Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
ALBUQUERQUE – Its District 4-5A slate is looming ahead, but Clovis High’s volleyball team has been on quite a run lately.
The Lady Wildcats extended their winning streak to seven matches on Saturday with wins over Del Norte 25-17, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23 and Highland 25-12, 25-7, 25-12 at Del Norte H.S.
It’s believed to be the program’s longest winning streak since the Lady Cats strung together seven consecutive victories late in the 2007 season under longtime former coach Darrel Ray.
Senior outside hitter Kailyn Jefferson pounded out 31 kills for the day – 21 against Del Norte – and added nine aces for the Lady Cats (9-2). Senior outside hitter/defensive specialist Aeryanne Conn added 46 digs – 28 against Del Norte while junior defensive specialist Jori Mondragon picked up 18 digs against the Knights (3-4) and 11 more against the Hornets (1-5).
The team left Clovis around 7 a.m. on Saturday, facing Del Norte at noon and Highland after that, and first-year coach Cristy Hill said they came out a little sluggish.
“We didn’t do a real great job of playing defense (at first),” first-year CHS coach Cristy Hill said. “We were kind of ‘blah.’”
Senior outside hitter Elizabeth Warwick collected 10 kills and two aces against Del Norte, while junior middle hitter Brooke Renteria collected five blocks in the two matches. Junior setter Amanda De La Rosa had 60 assists for the day to go with a couple of blocks.
The Lady Cats returned to action on Tuesday night at Rock Staubus Gym against Roswell Goddard. This weekend, they’ll participate in the Peyton Chavez Invite at Portales.
Fuentes second in Carlsbad meet – Clovis High sophomore Sammy Fuentes finished second in boys competition in Saturday’s Carlsbad Invite.
Fuentes posted a 5K time of 17 minutes, 11 seconds. However, he was the only Clovis runner to make the trip due to bus issues before the team’s scheduled departure early Saturday morning.
CHS coach Liz Ledesma said Fuentes went on to Carlsbad with his father, while the rest of the team remained in Clovis.
The previous week, heavy rains the night before flooded the course for the Lubbock Christian Invitational.
The Wildcats and Lady Wildcats hope to get back into action on Saturday when they are slated to participate in the Canyon Invitational.
