ELIDA – The Elida Tigers got a touchdown apiece from four players on Friday and turned back Roosevelt County and 6-man District 2 rival Dora 28-18.
Sophomore Cason Norman scored on a 17-yard run and senior Klayton Nixon returned a kickoff 50 yards for a touchdown to take the Tigers (4-3, 1-2 district) to a 14-6 lead at the quarter.
Senior Mikael Mulloy caught a 14-yard pass from sophomore Hayden Rubio in the third frame, then senior Seth Jimenez iced the game on a 2-yard TD run with just over a minute left. Nixon also had a pair of 2PAT kicks for Elida.
Junior Aaron Combs ran for two first-half scores for the Coyotes (3-5, 1-3), while junior Mason Christensen added a 25-yard touchdown run in the final session to make it 20-18.
Elida travels to Floyd in a 1 p.m. district outing on Friday. Meantime, Dora has an open date this week before facing Gateway Christian on Oct. 20 at Roswell.
Stratford 38, Farwell 7 – At Stratford, almost everything that could have gone wrong for Farwell against the Elks (6-0), ranked No. 3 this week in Texas Class 2A Division I by MaxPreps, as senior quarterback Bryce Braden threw for three touchdowns and ran for two in the District 1 opener for both teams.
Down 14-0 early, senior Corey Stancell returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown to get the Steers (4-2) on the board, but Braden's second TD pass of the period, a 27-yarder to junior wide receiver Santiago Ibarra, made it 20-7 at the quarter.
After a scoreless second frame, Braden went in on a 2-yard run and tossed a 17-yard TD pass to Vicente Morillon in the third, then tallied on a 5-yard run in the final stanza.
Stratford posted a 25-10 margin in first downs and outgained the Steers 464-151.
Farwell travels to Sanford-Fritch in district action on Friday.
