Obituary: Thelma Lowery

Thelma Lowery, age 102, of Farwell, TX passed away on Monday, October 16, 2023. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, October 20, 2023, at 10:00 am MST at Chapels of Angels, 1430 Thornton St., Clovis, NM with Pastor Greg Martin officiating. Burial will take place at Grady Cemetery, Grady, NM.

Thelma was born at home in a two-room house on the family farm five miles north of Broadview, NM, to the home of T.L. (Lonnie) Johnston and Maude (Powell) Johnston on January 9, 1921.

She attended Rosedale School and later transferred to Grady School where she graduated from high school in 1939. She met T.W. Lowery in Clovis and were later married in Biloxi, MS on October 13, 1945. To this union they had two daughters, Brenda (Carpenter) and Altha Kay (Herington).

The simplest pleasurers in life gave Thelma a lot of joy. She enjoyed spending time with her very energetic great-grandsons, tapping a toe to bluegrass and drinking Dr. Pepper. She took great care of her people in many ways. A few of those were by cooking a delicious meal, quilting a beautiful blanket or crocheting something unique. She also really appreciated the quiet and patient waiting on the lake for the perfect catch.

She is preceded in death by her husband; T.W. Lowery, parents; T.L. and Maude Johnston, one brother; L.A. Johnston, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Left to mourn her death are her daughters Brenda (Jimmy) Carpenter and Altha Kay Herington; grandsons Tyson Carpenter and his children Tyler and Rebecca, Todd Carpenter, and Trevor (Monica) Herington and their sons Thomas and Charles; granddaughters Cortney Herington and Monica Carpenter.
