ENMU women take fifth in Texas Tech rodeo

LUBBOCK – Eastern New Mexico University senior Shacie Marr earned her fifth consecutive trip to the short-round and led everybody in women’s competition with 115 points in a rodeo hosted from Thursday through Saturday by Texas Tech.

ENMU’s women finished fifth as a team, the Greyhounds’ third top-5 team finish of the fall.

Marr, from Tularosa, placed fifth in barrel racing, posting a time of 17.59 seconds in the first round and 17.60 seconds in the short round to earn sixth place in the event with 30 points.

Her other 85 points came in goat tying, where she went 7.2 seconds in the long round, and 7.1 in Saturday’s short round to give her fourth place overall in the event.

Also, junior Greeley Eastep and sophomore McKinzee Corliss were four-tenths of a second short of making the short-go in tiedown roping, each posting a time of 10.4 seconds.

ENMU’s men finished 12th in final team standings. Sophomore Rowdy Norwood led the way, reaching the finals in steer wrestling and splitting sixth place with a 4.9-second run, while senior Blasé Steffen just missed making the short-go by one-10th of a second in tiedown roping with a time of 10.5 seconds.

ENMU rodeo squads have completed their fall schedule. They begin the spring season in a rodeo at Odessa College, scheduled for Feb. 22-24.

Oklahoma Christian 1, ENMU 0 (men’s soccer, Saturday) – The Greyhounds, third in Lone Star Conference standings coming in, put themselves in a precarious position for making the six-team LSC tournament, dropping to a tie for sixth with Dallas Baptist (5-7-4, 2-3-3) after the loss to Oklahoma Christian at Greyhound Stadium.

Eight of the 10 teams are bunched within seven points of each other behind LSC regular-season Midwestern State heading into Wednesday’s final regular-season matches, so there’s a lot of potential jockeying left. The Hounds host Texas-Tyler (5-4-7, 1-3-4) in a 7 p.m. kickoff, while last-place St. Edward’s (0-10-5, 0-5-3) goes to West Texas A&M (7-5-4, 4-2-2), DBU goes to OC (4-7-6, 3-3-2), Texas A&M International (6-6-4, 2-4-2) plays at Lubbock Christian (6-3-7, 2-2-4) and St. Mary’s (8-3-6, 2-1-5) visits MSU (16-0-1, 8-0).

MSU and the runnerup receive first-round byes, while Saturday’s quarterfinals are at home sites, with No. 6 at No. 3 and No. 5 at No. 4. Semifinals and finals are slated for the MSU campus on Nov. 10 and 12.

OC freshman defender Elliott Forestier scored off a corner kick in the 71st minute for the only goal of the match. The Eagles, who hold fourth place, made it stand up as they posted a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal and a 9-3 margin in corners, including eight in the second half.

Dallas Baptist 2, ENMU 0 (women’s soccer, Saturday) – DBU freshman forward McKenna Vela scored her first goal of the campaign on a cross from sophomore midfielder Elise Borders just before halftime to give the 22nd-ranked and undefeated Patriots a two-goal lead, and ENMU was unable to make inroads the rest of the way in its home finale at Greyhound Stadium.

League-leading DBU (10-0-4, 7-0-3 LSC) got on the board in the 28th minute on junior midfielder Sophia Schrock’s seventh goal of the campaign. The Hounds (1-12-4, 0-10-1) finished the tilt with one shot on goal in absorbing their ninth consecutive setback.

Meantime, DBU pumped out 27 shots, including 10 on goal, and notched an 8-1 margin in corners.

ENMU was to complete its season on Tuesday with a late-afternoon match at rival West Texas A&M.

West Texas A&M 3, ENMU 0 (volleyball, Saturday) – Coming in on a two-match winning streak, ENMU knew it would have its hands full against the fifth-ranked Lady Buffs, and WT posted a 25-20, 25-13, 25-15 victory at Greyhound Arena.

ENMU (10-18, 1-13 LSC) mounted a late rally in Game 1, going on a 10-1 surge to cut a 22-10 deficit to three points with three kills, two aces and a block. The Lady Buffs (22-2, 11-1) put the second set out of reach, turning an 8-7 deficit around with a game-ending 18-5 blitz, then cruised through most of Game 3.

Junior outside hitter Brynne Wright posted 13 kills while sophomore middle blocker Taytum Stow had 12 kills and three block assists. Junior defensive specialist Bryli Contreras collected 23 digs and junior setter Ainsley Malis notched 26 assists.

Senior outside hitter Mikaela Garvin led the Hounds with nine kills, while senior libero Getsemani Carrasco notched 18 digs and sophomore Kayla Ison and senior Gracelyn Stubbs posted 14 and 11 assists, respectively.

The Hounds were to close their home slate on Tuesday night against non-league Wayland Baptist before finishing the year with LSC tilts at Lubbock Christian tonight and at Western New Mexico on Saturday.
