Obituary: Edith Faye (Parrott) Dunn

Edith "Faye" Dunn, former resident of Portales N.M. was taken home to be with Jesus on October 25th in Amarillo, Tx. after a long battle with Alzheimer's that robbed her brilliant mind and took away most all of her memories. She was born on August 18, 1936 in Raleigh, North Carolina. She was 87 years old.

Faye was a passionate, loving, and unwavering women who was full of a devotion to God and family. She had a gift of helping and educating others, devoting most of her life to teaching both in the public school and in the church.

In her youth Faye was an outstanding scholar who graduated from Texas State College for Women (now known as Texas Women's University) with a degree in Math and English, she graduated with honors. Faye was working as an elementary school teacher in Hawaii before she was 20 years old. She then went on to graduate in 1960 from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary with a Masters of Religious Education degree.

Faye taught math at Portales Junior High School for over 40 years. Faye was an active member of the New Mexico's Delta Kappa Gamma Society, an international organization that promotes professional and personal growth of women educators. She served as the editor of the New Mexico DKG newsletter for a number of years.

Faye met her husband Lawrence at Grandview Baptist Church in El Paso where Lawrence's parents attended church and Faye was the Youth Director. They were married on Aug 17, 1961. They were married for 57 years until Lawrence passed away in 2019. Faye and Lawrence were long time members of First Baptist Church in Portales, NM where they taught Youth Sunday School for 40 years. Faye also helped out in the church office for many years as well. Faye dedicated her life to the church and bringing people to find Jesus.

Faye always presented herself as a distinguished woman but she could at times tell a joke or bring a smile to someone's face with her great sense of humor. She enjoyed spending time with others just visiting. She loved to play games with her two grandsons and family before she began losing her memory. When her Alzheimer's began worsening she enjoyed strawberry snow cones from Bahama Bucks, watching and listening to the trains go by, and a rousing game of "noodle ball" which she was quite good at.

Faye is preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Dunn and her parents John B and Vera J Parrott of El Paso Tx.

She is survived by her sister Babs Parrott of Boerne Tx. and her daughter and son-in-law Jennifer and Joe Yankovich of Amarillo, her son Trenton Scott Dunn of San Antonio, and two grandsons Josh Yankovich and his wife Kourtney of Cedar Park, TX, and Jordan Yankovich and his wife Katie of Dallas, TX.

There will be a graveside memorial service for Faye on Wednesday, November 22 at 11 a.m. at the Portales Cemetery. All friends are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers the family is asking to make a donation to the American Alzheimer's Association or to your favorite children's charity.
