Lady Cats finish eighth in 5A state cross country meet

ALBUQUERQUE – Clovis High’s girls put two runners in the top 30 and the Lady Wildcats finished eighth in the 15-team Class 5A state cross country meet on Saturday, hosted by Albuquerque Academy.

Meantime, the Clovis boys ran shorthanded with junior Sammy Fuentes, the Wildcats’ top runner, nursing injuries and eighth-grader Erik Cordum also not available and the team finished 15th.

Rio Rancho swept both team titles in the 5K races, the boys posting a score of 34 to 57 for Volcano Vista and 94 for Rio Rancho Cleveland while the girls finished with 48 points to 86 for La Cueva and 90 for Cleveland. Individual winners were Rio Rancho’s Charlie Vause in 15 minutes, 17.16 seconds for the boys and Eldorado’s Gianna Rahmar in 16:58.01 for the girls.

Junior Gabrielle Foggie came in 27th for the Lady Cats in 20:36.56 while freshman Brooke Newcomer was 29th in 20:46.-01. Other finishes for Clovis included eighth-grader Rosalia Morales, 37th in 21:08.46; sophomore Jarelly Navarrete, 46th in 21:27.98; eighth-grader Christina Waltrip, 56th in 21:44.20; senior Oklumachi Anaele, 83rd in 22:47.94, and sophomore Joselyn Foggie, 84th in 22:48.04.

In boys competition, the top runner for the Cats was sophomore Santiago Verdugo, who was 64th in 18:01.14, while junior Victor Sanchez was 77th in 18:16.99, eighth-grader Adrian Surita came in 93rd in 19:00.38, junior Rudy Ledezma took 97th in 19:05.88, freshman Marquez Lippman placed 99th in 19:08.37, eighth-grader Connor McQuiggan finished 104th in 19:21.88, and eighth-grader Ryder Bonney was 105th in 19:29.86.

In Class 4A, Portales’ girls came in 16th, with Academy winning with 26 points to 32 for Los Alamos. Academy’s Anna Hastings took first place individually in 18:17.17.

For the Lady Rams, Miriam Caudillo led the way with a time of 24:02.12, good for 74th place.
