Texico notches sweep over Jal

JAL – Texico squads used big second quarters Thursday night to take control en route to a season-opening sweep of Jal.

In the boys' matchup, the Wolverines outscored the Panthers 18-7 in the second period to build a 13-point advantage on their way to a 69-36 victory. Meantime, the Lady Wolverines opened a 20-point halftime cushion with a 14-2 run in the second stanza and went on to win 42-26.

Junior Alex Fuentes tallied 21 points for Texico's boys, while brothers Blake and Jett Curtis added 15 apiece. The Wolverines went on to outscore Jal 35-15 over the final two cantos.

Nine players reached the scoring column for the defending Class 2A state champion Lady Wolverines, topped by 10 points from senior Kaya New and nine from junior Desiree Holman. Sophomore Johnna Butts led all scorers with 15 points for the Lady Panthers.

In other boys games on Thursday:

J.P. Stone Invitational, Dora – Elida and the host Coyotes breezed into the championship semifinals with easy wins on Thursday, the Tigers beating Amherst 60-40 while Dora rolled over Carrizozo 50-10.

Elida (2-0) led the Bulldogs (2-2) by just four points in the third quarter, but finished off the win with a 21-8 blitz in the final canto. Senior Klayton Nixon had a personal-best 30 points for the Tigers, who won handily despite a 2-for-12 showing from the free throw line, while sophomore Joel Garcia topped Amherst with 14 points.

Dora (1-0) had no such issues against Carrizozo, leading 31-7 at the quarter and turning most of the remainder of the contest over to its reserves. Ten players scored for the Coyotes, led by senior Cole Kircher's 12 points, with Aiden Zook topping the Grizzlies (0-2) with six.

Portales 'C' 66, Clovis Christian 42 – The visiting Rams pushed out to a 16-point halftime lead with a 22-11 run in the second quarter. Freshmen Braxton Williamson with 19 points and Jorge Trujillo with 15 lead the way for PHS (0-1).

Senior Jaden Martinez posted 18 points for the Eagles (0-2), and senior Noah McKay netted 15 on five 3-point baskets.

Alamo Navajo 52, Grady 27 – In Magdalena High's Steer Stampede, the Magdalena-based Cougars held the Bronchos to 10 second-half points to pull away in the season opener for both squads.

Sophomore Scotty Guerro had 19 points and sophomore Zephaniah Guerro added 11 for Alamo Navajo, which got scoring from nine players. Leading the way for Grady was freshman Hays Rush with nine.

Lubbock Roosevelt tournament – Bovina dropped a pair of games in pool play, losing to Littlefield 82-36 and to Tulia 55-41.

Senior Ja'Den Willims scored 18 points, senior Jeremiah Trevino had 14 and senior Omar Martinez 13 for Littlefield (5-0), which pulled away after a relatively close first quarter. Senior Miguel Lopez led the Mustangs with 15 points.

Tulia (4-3) pulled away in the final frame after Bovina trimmed a 10-point, first-quarter deficit to five entering the final stanza. Sophomore Zaiden Jalomo scored 25 points for the Hornets, while Lopez led the Mustangs with 14.

In girls Thursday tilts:

Nazareth Invitational – Farwell posted a pair of victories, defeating Muleshoe 76-40 and Shallowater 51-26 to clinch first place in Pool C.

The Lady Blue opened a 20-2 lead at the quarter against Muleshoe. All 10 players scored for Farwell, led by junior Bella Jaime with 14 and seniors Kennedi Richey and Chloee Whitten with 12 and 11, respectively.

For the Lady Mules (3-6), junior Aubrey Granados had 10 points and junior Megan Moran chipped in eight.

Farwell then posted its second win this season over Shallowater as Jaime had 16 points and junior Landri Richey added 14. Leading by nine, the Lady Blue outscored the Lady Mustangs16-4 in the third frame.

Carli Buckley had eight points for Shallowater (5-3).

Clovis Christian 28, Portales C 24 – At CCS, the Lady Eagles improved to 2-0 for the season, leading 9-2 at the quarter and holding off the Lady Rams (0-1).

Top scorers for CCS were freshmen Hannah McKay and Madisyn Kruckeberg with nine points, including three 3s for McKay, while freshman April Macho paced Portales 'C' with 16 points.

J.P. Stone Invitational, Dora – Elida improved to 2-0 with a 43-26 victory over Amherst, but the host Lady Coyotes weren't as fortunate – they dropped a 43-39 decision to Corona.

Harper Dunn, a 6-foot-4 freshman, scored 19 points while sophomore Kassidy Lightfoot added 11 as the Lady Cardinals (1-0) stunned Dora. Trailing by five points, Corona outscored the Lady Coyotes 13-4 in the final canto to advance to the championship semifinals.

Senior Faith Jasso paced Dora (0-1) with 15 points, while senior Bre'Ann Rodriguez and sophomore Dakota Jones tossed in nine apiece.

Elida raced out to a 17-5 lead at the quarter and kept the Lady Bulldogs (1-4) at bay the rest of the way. Freshmen Reatta Munsell netted 15 points and freshman Kembri Norman added 10 for the Lady Tigers.

Magdalena 55, Grady 32 – At the Steer Stampede, the home team built a 15-point halftime lead en route to a quarterfinal victory over the Lady Bronchos.

Sophomore Elia Crawford led three players in double digits for the Lady Steers (1-0) with 14 points, followed by junior Jorianna Mirabal with 11 and sophomore Jema Ganadonegro with 10. Junior Juanita Ramirez took game honors with 15 points for Grady (0-1), followed by seniors December Garza with eight and Taylor Foote with six.
