Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
HOBBS – With many of their top performers not on hand, Clovis High's swim teams probably did well to earn fifth-place team finishes in Saturday's Reid Eagle Invite.
Seniors Porter Kidd, David Reeb and Kriday Andiboina for the boys competed over the weekend in the Core Classic at Garland, Texas, just outside Dallas, while the Lady Wildcats had four key varsity swimmers – juniors Julia Spears and Brynn Longley, sophomore Claire Pella and freshman Molly Kidd – plus a couple of seventh-graders in that event as well.
CHS co-coach Elliott Ford said the remainder of the squad took advantage of the opportunity to step up in Clovis' second meet this month at Hobbs.
"It was definitely a good opportunity for those kids," Ford said. "Most everybody dropped times in their events."
Hobbs won the 13-team boys division with 499 points to 372 for Rio Rancho, while the Wildcats tallied 213 points. Artesia edged Rio Rancho 442-436 in the 12-school girls competition, with the Lady Cats finishing at 268 ½ – just one-half point behind Rio Rancho Cleveland.
Freshman Reagan Cornish was Clovis' lone new state qualifier, posting a time of 1 minute, 6.40 seconds in the 100 butterfly. She just missed qualifying in the 50 freestyle, also placing fourth in a season-best 27.30 seconds.
For the boys, freshman Isaac Forsyth had a strong showing in the 500 freestyle, coming in second in the event in 6:00.21.
"Rio Rancho had a ton of kids there," Ford said. "We knew if we placed in the top half (in the standings) that it was going to be good for us.
"They did a really good job. I was pleased with how they all performed."
Clovis has two meets remaining before the Christmas break. The Cats and Lady Cats will be in Lubbock on Friday and Saturday, then swim in the Carlsbad Invitational on Dec. 16.
