Melrose reaches title tilts

MELROSE – Melrose’s basketball teams certainly had no trouble reaching the finals of their own American Bank tournament this weekend.

The boys trounced To’Hajiilee 75-20 on Friday and were slated to face Grady, which routed Hagerman 71-46, in Saturday’s championship game, while the Melrose girls cruised past Gateway Christian 54-17 and were to meet Quemado in the finals.

Junior Josiah Roybal poured in a personal-best 22 points for the Buffs (2-0), who led 37-7 after just one quarter. Senior Michael Cardonita added 16 points and junior Brayden Eldridge 13, while the Warriors (3-2) received 14 points from senior Jacob Belone.

In the other semifinal, Grady (4-2) got off to a 25-9 lead at the quarter and thrashed Hagerman (1-3) behind 29 points from senior Zane Rush, including four 3-pointers. Sophomore Jai Padilla added 15 points and freshman Hays Rush 12 for the Bronchos, while junior Jevon Aguilar tallied 18 for Hagerman.

The Lady Buffs (2-0) scored 16 points in each of the first three stanzas and had no trouble with Gateway (2-2). Senior Graci Odom scored 17 points for Melrose, while seniors Addie Carlyle and Kye Saulsberry added 10 and 8, respectively, which faced Quemado (3-0), a 47-38 winner on Friday over To’Hajiilee, in the title match.

High scorer for the Lady Warriors was sophomore Kadence Garcia with 11 points.

In boys consolation play on Friday:

Quemado 39, Floyd 27 – The Eagles (2-1) outscored Floyd 10-2 in the second quarter for a seven-point lead and rode 10 points from junior Jack George and nine apiece from senior Ike Cline an junior Chisum Harriett to the victory.

Senior Isaias Nieto was the top scorer for the Broncos (0-2) with 10 points.

In another consolation semifinal, Gateway Christian defeated Mountainair.

In girls consolation action:

Grady 47, Floyd 22 – Leading by just a point at the quarter, Grady (3-2) outscored Floyd 30-7 over the middle two stanzas.

Senior Taylor Foote had a personal-best 26 points, including four 3-pointers, for Grady while junior Juanita Ramirez added nine. For Floyd (0-2), senior Jona Baros netted 10 points.

Grady was to face Hagerman, which defeated Mountainair on Friday, in Saturday’s fifth-place contest.
