CHS girls second, boys eighth in Tucumcari meet

TUCUMCARI – Clovis High’s girls finished second in a field of seven teams while the boys were eighth out of 12 on Saturday in Tucumcari’s Rattler Invitational.

The Lady Wildcats posted a pair of individual champions and finished with 30 points to 39 for Bushland. West Las Vegas came in third with 27 points.

On the boys’ side, Los Lunas took team honors with 225 ½ points to 171 for Amarillo Tascosa and 229 for West Las Vegas. The Wildcats tallied 64 points.

“It’s great to see the focus on improvement as the season progresses,” CHS coach Eric Zottnick said. “We’re off to a good start, (and) staying on the right track is critical. Wrestling requires both physical and mental strength. Our focus is to get our wrestlers in the best shape in both areas.”

Sophomore Zulehiny Mendoza and senior Cerena Fullerton at 120 were individual winners for the Lady Cats, while sophomore Sophie Collazo and freshman Guadalupe Guzman at heavyweight were third in three-girl round-robin brackets and junior Yocelyn Romero took fourth at 145.

Mendoza notched pins over Bushland’s Mataya Fuentes in the second period and Taos’ Angeleah Mares and West Las Vegas’ Henissy Gomez in the first. Fullerton defeated Tersa Valencia of Taos by first-period fall and Maddison Salls of Pecos on a second-period pin.

Eighth-grader Antonio Pena at 114 pounds and senior Fidel Madrid at 139 posted fourth-place finishes for the boys. Madrid defeated Aron Romero of Taos by second-period pin around a pair of byes before losing to Ayden Cordova of Los Lunas by second-period technical fall.

The Cats and Lady Cats visit Carlsbad for a district dual on Thursday in their final outings before the holiday break.
