Funeral services for Lola Jean Greathouse, 85, formerly of Portales will be held at 2:00 PM, Fri., Jan. 12, 2024 in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with her son, Mickey Gregory and her daughter, Kathy Maestas officiating. Burial will follow in the Inez Cemetery with Mickey Gregory, Jeff Maestas, Matt Pool, Ronald Dickson, Wendell Belcher and Alan Belcher serving as pallbearers. Those desiring to make memorial contributions may send them to either the New Mexico Baptist Childrens Home, where she worked for many years at P O Box 629, Portales, NM 88130, or to Living Hope Ministry of First Baptist Church of Arlington, 301 S Center St, Arlington, TX 76010. The family will receive guests at the funeral home on Thurs. evening from 6 until 8 PM.
Lola Jean Greathouse was born Nov. 28, 1938 in Portales, to the home of Willie Dell (Flatt) and Ervin Edward Hale, and died, Jan. 6, 2024 in Azle, TX. Lola grew up in Roosevelt County. Her elementary education was at Lingo, and her high school attendance was in Portales. On Aug. 11, 1976 in Dora, she was married to Keith Greathouse. Mr. Greathouse preceded her in death on July 9, 1992.
Lola was saved at the age of 14, and remained a lifelong member of the Baptist Church. During the time she lived in Portales she was active at the First Baptist Church, and was employed at the New Mexico Baptist Children's Home. Missions and evangelism were always a priority in her life. In 1995, she moved to Arlington, TX to make her home near her daughter, Kathy. While living there, she was employed as the Administrative Assistant to the Pastor to Single Adults at the First Baptist Church. She had been retired since 2009. For the past five years she had been a resident at Legacy Oaks of Azle Assisted Living in Azle, TX
Lola enjoyed traveling, and had visited numerous places in the U.S. including New York City, Boston and Alaska. In addition, she had traveled to Switzerland, as well as Austria, Germany, Australia and Mexico. She loved spending time with her family, and enjoyed keeping her mind active by playing Scrabble and other word games.
She is survived by her son, Mickey Gregory and daughter-in-law, Sandy of Lago Vista, TX; her daughter Kathy Maestas and son-in-law, Jeff of Fort Worth, TX; her daughter Karissa Greathouse of Lubbock, TX; her son Braxton Greathouse and daughter-in-law, Rhonda of Lebanon, OH; and her daughter Jene Allen of Kansas City, MO. Lola has been blessed with 14 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren whom she loved and prayed for daily. In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents, and her daughter Vicki Jean Gregory.
