After 18 hours of induced labor, Kasper Montes arrived Wednesday as the first 2024 baby at Plains Regional Medical Center.
Born at 1:33 a.m., Kasper is a treasure, said his mother, Maria Ortega. Kasper's name literally means bringer of treasure, she said.
"It was an amazing experience," Ortega said.
Kasper was born smaller than Ortega and his father John Montes expected – he's 6 pounds, 2 ounces and 19 inches in length.
Ortega and Montes are from Clovis, with Kasper being the third addition to their family. His older siblings are excited to meet him, Ortega said.
Ortega said she was continuously worried about Kasper's well being throughout labor. She said his heart rate was extremely irregular and delivery by cesarean had to be considered.
"It's a really good feeling to bring our little boy into this world. We are very happy he is healthy, especially since we had complications with the birth," Ortega said.
Montes described his son as a fighter. Ortega said Kasper was running two days past his due date.
Despite the scares, Ortega said it was all worth it knowing her son is healthy. She said one of her biggest new year's resolutions is to keep Kasper happy and healthy for the rest of his life.
"We will raise him and make sure he is healthy. Just be good parents and make sure everything is OK with him," Ortega said.
Ortega said motherhood isn't an experience she would trade for the world. Having Kasper was "love at first sight," she said.
