1956: Clovis Veterinary Hospital at 104 Hull St. offered “complete facilities for your pets.”

Services included bathing, boarding, clipping and grooming.

1957: Clovis voters elected three newcomers to the city commission, tossing out three incumbents.

Winners were Manzy Simms, Gerry Deming and Ned Houk.

Losers included Wayne Clements, Ted Waldhauser and O.G. Potter.

1958: Nita Northcutt was the new president of the Grady Girls 4-H Club. Donna Duke was the song leader.

1961: Brown Supply Co. in Muleshoe offered all sizes of irrigation pipe and dealt in concrete pipe, rubber gasket pipe, asbestos cement pipe and sprinkler systems.

1962: Former Gov. John Burroughs announced he would not seek the office again.

"Speculation had been running high for several months where Burroughs, a Portales peanut processor, would run again for the office he held in 1959-60," United Press International reported.

"But in making his announcement this morning, he said he had neglected his business interests 'almost completely' the past three years and now found it necessary to look after his own affairs."

1965: Clovis city commissioners expressed concerns about voter apathy and “campaign misinformation” related to an upcoming school bond election.

Commissioner Barney Barnard said city leaders needed to inform voters of the “absolute necessity” of bond issues.

1967: Eleven different Wildcats scored points as Clovis dropped Canyon, 74-52, in a boys high school basketball game.

Dan Shelley led the team with 29 points. Wayne Hallmark was credited with eight assists. Wayne Pollard had six steals.

Clovis' record improved to 8-5 for the season.

1973: The G.A. Gunn family of De Baca County was announced as the New Mexico Farm Family of the Year by the Farmers Home Administration, an award they were scheduled to receive at the end of the month.

Gunn grew up in Roosevelt County, and his wife, Naomi, grew up in De Baca County. The two were Farm Bureau directors, and he was a past president of the bureau.

They started farming in De Baca County in 1959 with a dozen heifers, $11,000, and a few acres of rented farmland.

1974: Roy Tindle was named “Citizen of the Year” at the annual Melrose Chamber of Commerce banquet.

Raymond Shumate received the “Workhorse Award,” while Noreen Smith and Wirt Washburn were named “Friendliest Clerks.”

Freshman U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici was the guest speaker.

1976: Young hunters were preparing to take classes.

A new law, scheduled to go into effect on April 1, would require that anyone 18 or younger complete a hunter safety course before being allowed to shoot.

Classes, which would meet for two hours twice a week for three weeks, would include instruction in firearms, survival, first aid, plus various shooting positions and firing techniques.

Cost for the classes was $3.

1988: Sixth-graders at Sandia Elementary School in Clovis were putting finishing touches on a play called "The Sound of Great Voices," that they were presenting in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.'s upcoming birthday.

The play, which had many parts written by students, was presented in the Sandia multipurpose room.

Students in "The Sound of Great Voices" included Kelly Cook, Jeremy Garcia, Katrina Cash, Stacey Lemmons, Brandi Link, Chris McCampbell, and Wesley Warthen.

1991: A 13-year-old Clovis girl had written a children’s book that placed in the top 100 in a national contest.

Melissa Summers’ book “A Mouse Tail,” told the story of six orphaned mice living in a big city.

About 250,000 entries were received for the National Written & Illustrated By ... Awards Contest for Students.
