Hounds compete in meet hosted by Northern Arizona

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Eastern New Mexico University got its indoor track season rolling on Friday in Northern Arizona University’s Axe ’Em Open.

Junior Hernon Joseph highlighted ENMU performances with an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark in long jump of 23 feet, 10 inches, good for third place and the top mark so far in the Lone Star Conference.

Meantime, freshman Jamoi Jackson posted what would have been a provisional time in the 60-meter dash (6.83 seconds), but conversion due to altitude made it 6.87 and left him two-hundredths of a second short of the needed mark. He has the second-fastest LSC time in the early going this season.

The ENMU men’s 1,600 relay clocked third in the meet in 3 minutes, 26.09 seconds with juniors Tre Buchanan and Timothy Frederick, Jackson and junior Luis Holguin, while Buchanan was fifth in the 400 in 49.01 seconds. Frederick, a second-team D-II All-American as a sophomore, was close behind Jackson in the 60-meter dash prelims with a time of 6.88 seconds.

For the women, sophomore Meghan Rodriguez set two personal bests, finishing fourth in the 400 (1:00.46) and posting a time of 26.98 in the 200. Sophomore Alisha Hayde was one notch behind her in the 400 in 1:01.44.

Senior Tamia Smith set a personal best at 49 feet, 1 ½ inches in shot put, placing her sixth. Freshman Helena Carboo-Klutsey was seventh in the 200 in a personal-best time of 25.58, while the 1,600 relay team of junior Kaylyn De La Rosa, freshman Marina Marquez, senior Savannah Romero and freshman Ambrosia Francis claimed sixth place in 4:16.08.

The Hounds are slated to be in Pittsburg, Kan., on Friday for Pittsburg State’s Rumble in the Jungle Invitational.
