Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Portales Animal Services is hosting a free vaccination and registration clinic from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Memorial Building parking lot.
Portales Community Services Director Kelly McClellan said the city received a grant, in the form of vaccine shots, by Petco Love for free pet vaccinations to community-owned pets.
She said she’s hopeful Portales can host a similar event once a month.
“Parvo season starts when the weather starts heating up and we are at the tail-end, hopefully, of a distemper outbreak, so we are very excited to be able to offer these vaccines to the community,” McClellan said.
Portales received 500 distemper/parvo shots for canines and 125 HCP shots to protect cats from viruses.
McClellan said the vaccines will be distributed to animals in the order they arrive at the facility.
Advice for those participating:
• Dogs must be on a leash the entire time and owners should constantly monitor them and their behaviors as others will be present.
• Cats should be in carriers as there will be a lot of animals and people. McClellan said there will be a high risk of escaped animals if owners are not cautious.
• Both cats and dogs must be 6 weeks or older to receive a shot.
Along with the free vaccinations, the city is also offering free registration. McClellan said this will give residents city tags, making it easy to return lost pets to their owners. She said owners will need proof of rabies vaccines to receive a city tag.
“We offer city tags throughout the month as well. They are $5 per animal, but we are trying the free registration clinic monthly, so, if you need to get your animal vaccinated, you can catch us at the next clinic,” McClellan said.
