PITTSBURG, Kan. – Eastern New Mexico University senior Tamia Smith and freshman Grizzell Scarlett posted event wins in Friday’s Rumble in the Jungle Invitational indoor track meet, hosted by Pittsburg State at the site of the NCAA Division II national indoor championships in March.
The homestandings Gorillas dominated both divisions of the event, winning the 10-team men’s side with 214 points to 103 for runnerup Harding (Ark.) and scoring 212 points to 78 for University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma in the 11-team women’s division.
ENMU’s women tied for seventh with Texas-Tyler, each scoring 29 points, while the men were ninth with 12 tallies.
For the women, Smith earned first place in shot put with an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark and personal-best throw of 45 feet, 1 inch. She added another point for the Greyhounds, placing eighth in shot put at 39-3 ¼.
Meantime, Scarlett claimed her second win this season in the women’s 60-meter dash, running 7.5 seconds in the finals to beat out another freshman, USAO’s Tori Ann Lindsay, by .13 seconds. Scarlett also placed sixth in the 200 at 25.36.
Other scoring for ENMU’s women came from a sixth-place finish by freshman Celina Thomas in triple jump at 35 feet, 5 ¼ inches, and eighths from freshman Helena Carboo-Klutsey in the 400 (58.68) and sophomore Kennedy Ulmer in shot put (39-3 ¼).
Highlighting ENMU’s men’s performances was a second-place finish by junior Timothy Frederick in the 200 with an NCAA provisional mark of 21.55 seconds. An NCAA Division II second-team All-American last spring, he currently ranks second in the Lone Star Conference and 13th in D-II in the 200.
Other scorers for the Hounds were Frederick, sixth in the 60 dash (6.92), falling just shy of a provisional qualifying mark, and sophomore Noe Ybaben Burciaga with a personal-best 44-2 ½ for eighth place in shot put.
ENMU’s next two meets will be hosted by the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, including this Friday’s New Mexico Team Open and the New Mexico Collegiate Classic on Feb. 2.
