Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Our People: Radio personality talks sandwiches, cars

Ask Seth Daniel who he is and the first thing he says is, "Father."

After that answer he describes himself as "husband and proud member of our community."

"I am also a chicken farmer," Daniel said.

After his Wednesday morning radio show he told The News more about his life.

Q: What brought you to Portales?

A: My family moved here in 2002 when my parents took a job as house parents at the New Mexico Children's Home.

I've moved around a lot but I always find myself back here.

I was born in Albuquerque and was brought to Portales as an infant and placed in the New Mexico Children's Home where my parents adopted me.

Q: Tell us about your family.

A: I have a beautiful wife, Jessica, and two incredible kids who fill my life with joy, Zoey and Easton.

Q: What did you want to be when you grew up?

A: A lawyer or detective, and look at me now.

Then I found out the reality of those careers.

In high school we had a band and we wanted to be rock stars.

I wanted to play music and pay the bills with it.

Q: What careers have you had?

A: I've been a land surveyor, worked construction, I was a car salesman for a long time.

I was a bartender at a wine bar in Ruidoso.

And I was an umpire for a few seasons.

Q: What do you do now?

A: I'm a radio personality and production director at Global 1 Media.

Weekday mornings we have the best radio show around.

I get to have a great radio show with one of my best friends, Terri Chavez.

Q: What do you like about your job?

A: I love the flexibility.

I love getting to interact with the folks in our community.

Q: What's your favorite book?

A: "Dune" by Frank Herbert.

It's a better sci-fi work than "Star Wars."

Q: What's your favorite movie?

A: "The Prestige."

It's a cinematic masterpiece. The story is incredible.

Q: What's your dream vacation?

A: I want to go north.

I want to see the Northwest Passage, the Arctic.

Any vacation spot with family.

It doesn't matter.

Q: What's the best sandwich?

A: The Monte Cristo.

French toast with ham, turkey, with cheddar and Swiss cheeses, and some strawberry jam on the side.

Dip it in batter then fry it, or eat it as it is.

It's so good.

Second is peanut butter and jelly on soft white bread,

Lay's potato chips on the side and a cold glass of 2% milk.

Q: What do you do in your off hours?

A: Hang out with my kids, ride my motorcycle and wrench on cars.

Q: Speaking of wrenching on cars, what is your dream car acquisition?

A: It would probably be a 1986 Pontiac Firebird.

Classic American muscle.

Q: What's the worst smell?

A: The smell of failure.

Q: What's your favorite food?

A: Homemade food.

My favorite dish is Cottage Pie.

I learned how to make it in Germany.

It's like Shepherd's Pie but with beef instead of lamb.

Q: What's your favorite saying or quote?

A: "To love someone means to see them as God intended them," from Fyodor Dostoyevsky.

I love Russian authors.
