TUESDAY PREPS: Steers roll past Panhandle 59-41

PANHANDLE, Texas – Farwell's boys opened a 28-point halftime lead on Tuesday night and cruised past Panhandle 59-41 to maintain the top spot in District 3-2A.

The Steers (17-9, 4-0 district) posted their sixth consecutive victory. They have a one-game lead over Vega (11-7, 3-1) while the Panthers (12-10, 2-2) fell two games off the pace.

Farwell outscored Panhandle 24-6 in the second frame for a 41-13 cushion. The Panthers then limited the Steers to four points in the third segment while cutting the margin to 14, but they got no closer.

Junior Ryder McElroy scored 17 points, sophomore Braddock Foster finished with 15 and senior Cesar Snyder added 10 for Farwell. Junior Caiden Crook led Panhandle with 13 points and junior Wes Kuehler tossed in 10.

In other area boys games on Tuesday:

Elida 65, Dexter 50 – At Elida, the Tigers opened a 15-5 lead after the first stanza and went on to subdue the Demons.

Senor Seth Jimenez led the way for Elida (8-10) with 20 points, while senior Klayton Nixon scored 11, senior Seth Smith 10 and junior Hardy Fraze 9. For Dexter (7-12), freshman C.J. Granados easily took game honors with 30 points.

Floyd 55, Hondo 36 – At Floyd, the Broncos held the Eagles to nine first-half points and built a 33-point advantage through three quarters.

Senior Benton Cain got Floyd (6-7) off to a flying start with three consecutive 3-point baskets in the opening segment, finishing with 20 points and four 3s. Seniors Isaias and Daegan East collected nine and eight points, respectively, while sophomores David Melendez and Edwin Gallegos followed with seven and six.

For Hondo (3-8), senior Erubiel Reye and sophomore Ismael Ontiveros had 10 points apiece.

Bovina 43, Amarillo Highland Park 28 – At Amarillo, the Mustangs got out to an 8-1 lead at the quarter and coasted to the District 3-2 victory.

Senior Miguel Lopez funneled in 18 points and sophomore Angel Lara had 12 for the Mustangs (10-15, 2-2). High scorers for the Hornets (8-17,1-3) were senior Alex Conway with 10 and junior Zach McClung with nine.

Fort Sumner JV 36, Clovis Christian 29 – At CCS, the Foxes went scoreless in the second period, but erased a six-point deficit by outscoring the Eagles 17-3 in the third canto.

Senior Warren Oberg and freshman Ashton Ward tallied six points each for Fort Sumner. Senior Jaden Martinez took game honors with 11 points for CCS (8-8), while senior Noah McKay scored eight.

In area girls contests on Tuesday:

Bovina 49, Amarillo Highland Park 32 – In District 3-2A, the Fillies jumped on top 18-8 in the opening stanza, then finished off the Lady Hornets with a 15-4 blitz in the final frame.

Senior Destiny Lara netted 17 points and sophomore Rihana Gonzalez added 10 for Bovina (6-14, 2-4). For Highland Park (2-21, 0-6), sophomore Cadence Cowden posted six tallies.

Floyd 28, Hondo 24, OT – At Floyd, the Lady Broncos outscored Hondo 7-3 in the extra session to register their second victory of the campaign.

Senior Jona Barros led Floyd (2-11) with 12 points. Top scorer for the Lady Eagles (2-12) was sophomore Aaliyah Valenzuela with 11 points.

Farwell 51, Panhandle 31 – The Lady Blue trailed by three points after the first frame, but dominated the rest of the way in a District 3-2A matchup.

Junior Makylee Baldwin netted 19 points for Farwell (25-3, 6-0), a winner of 11 games in a row and ranked No. 2 in Texas Class 2A by MaxPreps. Sophomore Evan Shadid collected nine points for the Lady Panthers (14-6, 2-2).

Elida 32, Dexter 23 – At Elida, the Lady Tigers climbed back above the .500 mark (10-9), grinding out a win over the Lady Demons (5-16).

Freshmen Reatta Munsell with eight points and Addison Yates with seven led the way for the Lady Tigers, whose 10-player roster includes two sophomores, three freshmen and three eighth-graders. The Lady Demons (3-16), with a nine-player squad featuring four eighth-graders and three sophomores, were paced by 11 points from junior Karina Fuentes.

Fort Sumner JV 24, Clovis Christian 15 – The Vixens prevailed in a defensive battle at CCS, getting 10 points from Beau Wall and nine from Cynthia Chavez.

Three players – senior Allison McRaven and sophomores Lauren Weaver and Jalisa Raney – all had four points for CCS (10-6), while freshman Hannah McKay scored the other three.
