Second suspect in July slaying arrested

The second suspect in the July 9 slaying of a roofer in Clovis has been arrested.

Portales police on Jan. 26 took Cordney Cooper into custody. Cooper, 32, is charged with murder in connection with the shooting death and robbery of Anibal Salguero, 31.

Officials said Cooper was arrested in Portales after a citizen had called police claiming to have seen the suspect. FBI Special Agent David De Los Santos said several officers arrived at the scene where Cooper was located. Cooper did not resist arrest, De Los Santos said.

In addition to the murder charge, Cooper is charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery, and possession of a firearm or destructive device by a felon. Records show he is being held in the Curry County jail with no bond. His next court date is Thursday, records show.

Three others alleged to have been involved in Salguero’s death have been released from the Curry County Detention Center and are awaiting trial.

Alex Zapata, 25, is also charged with murder in the first degree, accessory to armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery in the third degree, tampering with evidence, felon in possession of a firearm, and embezzlement of a motor vehicle.

Two women face lesser charges.
