DORA – Dora’s boys had their hands full with District 4-1A and Roosevelt County rival Floyd on Friday night.
Leading by just six points, the Coyotes finally took control in the final stanza, outscoring the Broncos 11-0 for a 48-31 victory.
Junior Aaron Combs tallied a personal-bet 21 points and senior Cole Kircher added 13 for Dora (11-7, 3-0 district). Senior Isaias Nieto notched 13 points and senior Drew Essary added 10 for Floyd (7-9, 0-3).
In other Friday boys action:
Farwell 78, Boys Ranch 16 – At Boys Ranch, the red-hot Steers moved closer to the District 3-2A title with a rout of the overmatched Roughriders.
All 11 players scored for Farwell (20-9, 7-0), which won its ninth in a row. Junior Ryder McElroy led the way with 15 points while sophomore Hudson Agee had 12 and senior Cesar Snyder 11.
For Boys Ranch (8-19, 0-7), senior Ethan Rex had seven points.
Vega 53, Bovina 39 – In another District 3-2A tilt at Vega, the Longhorns outscored the Mustangs 16-7 in the third quarter to extend a one-point halftime lead.
Senior Braden Brohman led Vega (13-8, 5-2) with 16 points, while senior Diego Martinez chipped in 13 and junior Braden Hamilton had three 3s and 10 points. For Bovina (11-17, 3-4), sophomore Angel Lara tallied 15 points and senior Miguel Lopez added 11.
In a non-district boys matchup on Friday, Melrose (18-2) posted a 71-36 victory at home over Jal (10-9).
On the girls’ side:
Farwell 80, Boys Ranch 21 – The Lady Blue kept on rolling, winning their 13th in a row to improve to 28-3 (9-0 District 3-2A).
Juniors Makaylee Baldwin with 24 points and Natalie Wade with 15 paced Farwell, while senior Althea Usanga notched eight points for the Lady Riders (10-14, 3-6).
Melrose 72, Jal 40 – Senior Graci Odom scored 17 points and sophomore Skyla Walked had 10, and the Lady Buffs (17-3) used a 26-point second quarter to pull away from Jal (8-10) at home in non-district play.
Sophomore Johnna Butts paced the Lady Panthers with 14 points and freshman Mayrin Nieto had 10.
Dora 68, Floyd 20 – Sophomore Dakota Jones had a personal-best 26 points and the Lady Coyotes (12-6, 3-0 District 4-1A) dominated their county rivals.
Freshman Miranda Gomez added 10 points and senior Bre’Ann Rodriguez eight for Dora. The Lady Broncos (3-13, 1-3) were paced by senior Jona Baros with 12 points.
In another District 3-2A matchup on Friday night, host Vega (14-18, 6-3) scored a 40-34 win over Bovina (6-17, 2-7).
