THURSDAY PREPS: Wolverines turn back Clayton in district opener

CLAYTON – Senior Cade Figg paced four Texico players in double figures with 18 points and the Wolverines rallied in the second half to defeat Clayton 71-63 on Thursday in the District 6-2A boys opener for both squads.

Freshman Jett Curtis added 13 points, junior Alex Fuentes 12 and senior Daltyn Cain 10 for the Texico (9-10 overall), which trailed by five points at halftime but outscored the Yellowjackets 38-25 over the final two stanzas.

Senior Jonoven Hidalgo led all scorers with 22 points for Clayton (10-12), while junior Taylor Crist had 16.

In other Thursday boys action:

Logan 63, Melrose 52 – At Logan, the Longhorns (19-2, 1-1 District 6-1A) rallied to win by outscoring Melrose 24-9 in the fourth period. Junior Diego Sanchez earned 12 of his 14 and senior Kaeden Stoner had all seven of his points in the final canto for the Longhorns, ranked second this week in Class 1A by MaxPreps behind the Buffaloes (18-2, 1-1).

Six-foot-4 sophomore Mason Wallin had 15 points for Logan while 6-5 sophomore Hayden Bruhn chipped in 14. For the Buffs, junior Cy Draper tallied 16 points and senior Michael Cardonita had 11.

Fort Sumner 64, Grady 42 – The host Foxes, who began District 6-1A play with a home win over Logan on Tuesday night, buried 11 3-pointers by six players and left the Bronchos (7-10, 0-3) in a 27-4 hole after the first quarter.

Seniors Joaquin Segura and Jayton Morris each had three 3s and finished with 17 and 15 points, respectively, for the Foxes (17-3, 3-0), ranked third in 1A by MaxPreps. Freshman Hays Rush paced Grady with seven points.

Dora 64, Gateway Christian 42 – Junior Aaron Combs led a balanced Coyotes attack with 16 points in a District 4-1A tilt at Roswell.

Dora (10-7, 2-0) led 19-9 at the quarter, then ran away with a 22-7 margin in the final stanza. Junior Ashton Davis tallied 15 points, senior Cole Kircher had 11 and junior Mason Christensen netted 10 for the Coyotes.

Leading the Warriors (6-11, 1-2) was freshman Grady Munson with 21 points.

Elida 79 , Lake Arthur 26 – In another 4-1A clash at Elida, the Tigers (10-10, 3-0) opened a 56-17 halftime lead as 13 players scored for Elida, led by senior Seth Jimenez with 15 points and sophomore Radlee Ferguson with 14.

Zach Tweedy paced the winless Panthers (0-9, 0-3) with six points.

Another boys matchup was to send San Jon to Clovis Christian, but it was cancelled due to illness on the Coyotes’ squad.

In girls tilts on Thursday:

Clovis Christian 25, San Jon 24 – At CCS, the Lady Eagles had a five-point lead with 30 seconds left and managed to hang on to defeat the Lady Coyotes.

Sophomore Hannah Medina and freshman Hannah McKay posted nine points apiece for the Lady Eagles (11-7) and combined for four 3-point baskets, three by Medina. Senior Sarah Archuleta netted eight points for San Jon (2-8).

Logan 45, Melrose 35 – The Lady Longhorns broke away from a 15-15 halftime tie to subdue the Lady Buffs in a District 6-1A showdown at Logan.

Seniors Hailee Robertson, Lizzy Horner and Camryn Cantrell all finished with 11 points for Logan (14-7, 1-1), ranked sixth in Class 1A by MaxPreps. Junior Kinlee Bradley had 14 points and senior Graci Odom 11 for the No. 3 Lady Buffs (16-3, 1-1), who had an eight-game winning streak snapped.

Clayton 46, Texico 36 – At Clayton, the Lady Jackets built an 11-point halftime lead and kept Texico at bay the rest of the way in the District 6-2A opener for both squads.

Senior Emersen Beiland notched 21 points for Clayton (14-7). Senior Desiree Holland collected a personal-best 17 points to lead the Lady Wolverines (6-12).

Ironically, Texico had the same record last season before winning 11 of its final 12 games to capture the Class 2A state championship.

Dora 58, Gateway Christian 25 – At Roswell, the Lady Coyotes rode double-figure scoring from seniors Bre’Ann Rodriguez (17) and Faith Jasso (16) and sophomore Dakota Jones (13) to an easy District 4-1A victory over the Lady Warriors.

Dora (11-6, 2-0) opened a 16-3 lead at the quarter and never looked back. Senior Rylee Strickland was the top scorer for Gateway (10-7, 2-1) with six points.

Elida 48, Lake Arthur 17 – In another District 4-1A clash, the Lady Tigers (11-10, 1-1) jumped back over the .500 mark, shutting out Lake Arthur in the opening stanza and cruising into halftime in front 21-3.

Freshmen Addison Yates and Kembri Norman delivered 12 points for Elida, and sophomore Charity Smith notched 11. Freshman Ava Romero paced the Lady Panthers (0-12, 0-3) with eight points.

Fort Sumner 65, Grady 27 – Junior Allyssa Casaus erupted for five 3-pointers and 34 points as the Vixens, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, jumped on Grady early in District 6-1A. Casaus had 10 of her points and her cousin, junior Emmarie Causas, added seven of her 12 in the opening stanza as Fort Sumner (7-4, 3-0) opened a 22-4 cushion.

Junior Juanita Ramirez tallied 12 points for Grady (7-10, 0-3).
