FORT SUMNER – Melrose held Fort Sumner to eight first-half points and the Lady Buffs, ranked third in Class 1A by MaxPreps, posted a 47-34 win over the second-ranked Vixens in a District 6-1A clash.
Sophomore Skyler Wicker led Melrose (18-3, 2-1 district) with 14 points while senior Graci Odom added 12 on four of the Lady Buffs’ nine 3-pointers. Melrose led 24-8 at the intermission, fought off a third-quarter rally by the Vixens (17-5, 3-1) and pulled away with an 18-point fourth quarter.
Junior cousins Emmarie and Allyssa Causes paced Fort Sumner with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
In other girls action on Tuesday:
Texico 36, Tatum 32 – The defending Class 2A state champion Lady Wolverines outscored 2A No. 1 Tatum 12-7 in the second quarter for a five-point lead and went on to the non-district victory at Texico.
Junior Adalyn Autrey and sophomore Briley Burgin paced Texico (8-12) with eight points apiece. Sophomore Avery Henard led all scorers with 16 points for the Lady Coyotes (20-2), who had a 12-game winning streak snapped and suffered their second loss of the season at Texico – they fell to Tohatchi 47-39 in the championship semifinals of Texico’s Citizens Bank tournament in December.
Farwell 78, Vega 23 – At Farwell, the Class 2A fourth-ranked Lady Blue won their 15th in a row and wrapped up their regular campaign with a blowout win over the Lady Longhorns (14-19, 6-4).
Junior Landri Richey led five players in double digits for Farwell (29-3, 10-0 District 3-2A) with 18 points, while senior Chloee Whitten had 16 and juniors Natalie Wade, Kennady Waldrop and Bella Jaime finished with 13, 11 and 10, respectively.
Farwell, which has a 2A bi-district contest at 6:30 p.m. (CST) on Monday against New Deal at Littlefield, opened a 19-0 lead at the end of the first stanza.
Dora 51, Elida 43 – In District 4-1A at Dora, the Lady Coyotes (13-6, 4-0) broke away from a halftime tie to turn back their Roosevelt County rivals.
Senior Bre’Ann Rodriguez led three Dora players in double digits with 19 points, while senior Faith Jasso added 14 and sophomore Dakota Jones scored 11. For the Lady Tigers (11-11, 1-2), sisters Kembri and Kali Norman led the way with 10 and 9 points, respectively.
Grady 51, Floyd 36 – At Grady, the Lady Bronchos opened a 20-point halftime lead and posted non-district triumph over Floyd.
Senior December Garza tallied 14 points and senior Taylor Foote added 14 for Grady (9-10), which also got nine points from junior Juanita Ramirez and eight from freshman Lexee Leppke. Top scorers for Floyd (3-14) were senior Jona Baros with three 3s and 13 points and junior Neveaha Brown with 10.
In boys’ Tuesday contests:
Elida 74, Dora 61 – At Dora, the visiting Tigers maintained the top spot in District 4-1A, extending a 24-12 lead the quarter to 18 points by the end of three.
Senior Seth Jimenez posted 27 points and junior Hardy Fraze added 22 for Elida (11-10, 4-0), while senior Klayton Nixon tossed in 11. Senior Cole Kircher netted 22 for the Coyotes (11-8, 2-2), who also got 15 from junior Aaron Combs and 11 from junior Roddy Neal.
Fort Sumner 55, Melrose 49 – The Buffaloes found themselves down 20-7 at the quarter and a late comeback fell short in a District 6-1A battle of top-three teams.
Senior Joaquin Segura had 18 points junior Aaron Torres 16 and senior Cash Burney 12 for the Foxes (18-4, 4-0), ranked third by MaxPreps in 1A. Juniors Brayden Eldridge and Chance Brittenum led the way for the second-ranked Buffs (18-3, 1-2) with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Farwell 72, Vega 27 – The Steers continued their relentless march through District 3-2A, clinching a tie for the district crown with two games left.
The Steers (21-9, 8-0) had a pair of 20-point stanzas while the Longhorns (13-11, 5-3) were held to single figures in every quarter. Junior Ryder McElroy led a balanced attack with 13 points as nine players scored for Farwell, which extended its winning streak to 10. Also in double figures were sophomore Braddock Foster with 11 and senior Cesar Snyder and freshman Ruben Molina with 10 apiece.
Vega was paced by senior Reese Robbins with seven points.
Grady 57, Floyd 34 – The host Bronchos led 17-7 at the quarter and finished off the win by outscoring Floyd 19-3 in the final canto.
Senior Zane Rush led Grady (9-8) with 26 points while his brother, freshman Hays Rush, contributed 15. Floyd (7-10) got 11 points from senior Drew Essary while sophomore Edwin Gallegos knocked down a trio of 3-pointers for nine.
Texico 67, Tatum 25 – The Wolverines ran away from the overmatched Coyotes, cruising after building a 47-12 halftime advantage.
While no one reached double figures for Texico (11-10), 11 players scored led by seniors Blake Curtis and Cade Figg and sophomore Maverick Hawkins with eight apiece. Tatum (2-20), which was actually coming off a win over Hagerman in its previous outing, had the game’s high scorer in senior Carlos Martinez with nine.
Panhandle 48, Bovina 32 – At Bovina, the visiting Panthers used a 20-point third quarter to take control in a District 3-2A tilt.
Sophomore Broxton Robinson took game scoring honors with 11 points for Panhandle (14-10, 6-2). Senior Miguel Lopez was the high score for Bovina (11-18, 3-5) with nine points.
