SILVER CITY – Clovis High’s girls will send sophomore Sophie Collazo to the state wrestling tournament after she earned third place in Region 2 competition over the weekend at Silver H.S.
The Lady Wildcats, with five girls competing, finished 20th in a 33-team field with 36 points. Atrisco Heritage won the team championship with 194 points to 147 for runnerup Roswell Goddard.
Collazo (12-15 for the season) went 5-1 in the tournament, losing only to Valley’s Lorelei Troncoso on a first-period fall in her second match. She came back to pin Troncoso in the clash for third place.
Collazo won her first-round match by against Dia Trillo of Atrisco Heritage with a first-period pin. She then advanced to the third-place match with first-period falls against Chaparral’s Jenessis Borjas and Santa Teresa’s Roxy Herrera, and a second-period pin against Ebony Balderrama of Gadsden.
Also for the Lady Cats, sophomore Sunnay Ward finished eighth – one spot shy of qualifying for state – with a 2-3 record for the weekend at 152. Meantime, sophomore Zulehiny Mendoza went 2-2 at 114, and senior Cerena Fullerton at at 120 and junior Jaylyn Trujillo at heavyweight were both 0-2.
Boys regional competition is on tap this Friday and Saturday at Roswell.
The state wrestling tournament for boys and girls is scheduled for Feb. 23-24 at Rio Rancho Events Center.
