AMARILLO – Farwell’s girls built a commanding lead, saw most of it dissipate, then pulled away with a strong defensive second half to beat Clarendon 52-38 on a Texas Class 2A area (second) round game on Friday night at West Plains H.S.
Junior Makylee Baldwin scored 18 points, junior Landri Richey had 14 and junior Bella Jaime added 10 for the Class 2A second-ranked Lady Blue (31-3), who won their 17th game in a row and advance to a Tuesday regional quarterfinal match against Floydada (27-3), at a time and site to be determined. The Whirlwinds, ranked 14th in 2A by MaxPreps, are also on a 17-game run after edging Gruver 43-41 in the area round.
Farwell led the sixth-ranked Lady Broncos (28-3) 28-12 midway through the second quarter before Clarendon pulled to four at halftime on a 14-2 run. The Lady Blue allowed only 12 points after the break.
Sophomore Kenidee Hays led the Lady Broncos with 13 points, followed by senior Graci Smith with 10.
In other Friday girls action:
Grady 54, Dora 50 – In a non-district tilt, the homestanding Lady Bronchos got off to an 18-12 first-quarter lead and played the Lady Coyotes even the rest of the way.
Senior December Garza scored nine of her game-high 22 points to help Grady (10-12) get off to its fast start. Junior Juanita Ramirez followed with 13 points.
For the Lady Coyotes (15-7), senior Faith Jasso scored 16 points, sophomore Dakota Jones finished with 14 and senior Bre’Ann Rodriguez chipped in 10.
Floyd 38, Lake Arthur 20 – In District 4-1A at Lake Arthur, senior Jona Baros converted three 3-pointers and 5-of-6 free throws en route to 16 points for the Lady Broncos (4-16, 2-5), who built an 11-point halftime lead and put the Lady Panthers (0-16, 0-6) away with a 13-6 advantage in the final canto.
Junior Julianna Garcia added 10 points for Floyd. Freshmen Ava Romero and Mireya Olivas tallied six points apiece for Lake Arthur.
On the boys’ side:
Grady 53, Dora 48 – At Grady, the Bronchos (10-10) won a seesaw non-district clash with the Coyotes behind 21 points from senior Zane Rush and 13 from his brother, freshman Hays Rush.
For Dora (13-9), senior Cole Kircher had five of the Coyotes’ nine 3-pointers and finished with 21 points.
Meantime, Floyd (9-12, 3-5 District 4-1A) was awarded a forfeit victory over Lake Arthur (0-11, 0-6).
