Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Improvements are coming to the Roosevelt County fairgrounds.
At their regular February meeting Tuesday, in discussion about the fairgrounds master plan, county commissioners heard of Americans with Disabilities Act parking coming this year along with ADA restrooms and horse stalls.
The projects are expected to go out to bid by the end of this month or in March.
Concerns about the fairgrounds’ two aging Quonset barns were brought up by Commissioner Tina Dixon.
Master plans call for moving more activity into the fairgrounds pavilion.
Commissioner Roy Lee Criswell said he wanted to know how much square footage would be lost by moving activity out of the Quonset barns.
“I have constituents who have called me, concerned about this,” Criswell said.
Commissioner Dennis Lopez said he’d like to see fairground fencing addressed, and that he’d rather see wrought iron fencing installed as opposed to chain link fencing.
County Road Supervisor Juan Dominguez reported the project on Roosevelt Road 20 has been completed.
Lopez commented to Dominguez he has received calls complaining county residents are coming into Portales and dumping trash into Portales dumpsters. Lopez asked Dominguez about improvements in county dumping stations and looking into improvements.
Also at Tuesday’s meeting, Roosevelt County Sheriff Javier Sanchez reported to commissioners that since the county has had a contract with Portales for dispatch services, “It’s going well.”
“It’s the best in my 20 years of service in Roosevelt County,” Sanchez said.
Dixon pointed out commissioners had voted previously to enter into an agreement with Lea County dispatch in the future.
Sanchez reiterated Portales dispatch has been working on improvements.
Commissioners resolved to hear a report from Portales dispatch at a March meeting.
