Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Larry Rogers likes to tell the story about the day he was born in Tularosa, on April 1, 1965.
"My brother and I were born that day," he said. "I was born first. So the doctor said to my mother, 'There's another one in there.'
"My mom was holding me and said, 'I just want to enjoy my baby. Stop telling me April Fools' jokes.'
"Then my brother Terry was born."
Rogers shared more stories with The News on Wednesday afternoon.
Q: What brought you to Clovis?
A: I was born in Tularosa and grew up in Alamogordo.
We came to Clovis to take care of my grandmother.
Q: Tell us about your family.
A: Family is my mom, my twin Terry, a cousin and a 91-year-old uncle.
Terry is my identical twin. We like to play tricks on people all the time.
My brother will pretend to know a person and then at the end of the conversation he'll say to the person, "I'm Terry, Larry has a twin."
Q: What jobs have you had?
A: I started out as a maintenance worker.
Then I got a job with the city of Clovis as an animal control officer. I did that for 20 years then retired.
Since then I've been a maintenance worker, security officer and an officer at the local juvenile detention center.
They closed the juvenile detention center in 2020 so I went back to work as a security officer.
I like to be pro-active in my work to prevent things from happening, paying attention to detail.
Q: What's your favorite place to vacation?
A: Las Vegas, Nev., was becoming my favorite vacation spot but not as some would think, to gamble. It was to visit my dad but he passed away this year.
I like to visit a church up there where I met some new people.
I have a new saying now, "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, so what did I do? I went to church."
Q: What's your favorite food?
A: I have a lot of favorite foods.
I love to prep basic meals during the week and have cheat meals on the weekend.
Weekends I'll have pizza and fried foods like you'd put in an air fryer.
Q: What's your favorite sport and sports team?
A: Football. I love the Pittsburgh Steelers.
I've loved the Steelers from the moment I saw the black and gold in my youth.
At the time they were winning Super Bowls, four Super Bowl rings in less than six years. It had a part in them becoming my favorite team.
Q: Tell us something about yourself that few people know.
A: I play guitar for song service at my church.
I have also fallen in love with playing piano.
I can play many styles of music.
Q: What is the worst smell?
A: Dead skunk. It's from something that happened during my animal control days, a long story.
Q: What's the best sandwich?
A: A cheeseburger from In-N-Out Burger like the one in Las Vegas, Nev.
It's cheesy and the burger tastes great.
Q: Who or what inspires you?
A: Reading the Bible inspires me because it leads me to get inspired to pray and feel God's presence.
I share my experiences with others so as not to hide his light.
There's a quote about that: "Let his light shine on a hill."
Q: Do you have a favorite saying?
A: "Don't sweat the small stuff."
